I'm going to be selling some low end hardware and I figure it'll be more attractive with some kind of OS on it. The cost of putting legitimate Windoze on them is prohibitive. And I'm not wasting my MSDN serial numbers on hardware that I can't sell for very much money. I figure a free Linux distro will make these decent "office" machines. Surfing the web and stuff like that. That's where I'm headed checking these distros out. I don't give a crap about gaming and never have spent any money on games. This hardware won't be sold as gaming rigs.

For my Linux "fix", I'm running the newest Pinguy OS 12.04 based on the Ubuntu framework and utilizing the Gnome shell. It has all the goodies you would normally install after installing a Linux distro pre-installed, so you have a full featured "out of the box" experience. I highly recommend it for anyone that is interested in playing around with Linux without having the learning curve of working in terminals, creating repositories, running commands in a shell etc

That's what I'm saying, for you and your machines you're selling, an open source OS makes cost effective sense.

For you, I think it's a great idea!
For me... it's Windoze 8 FTMFW! LOL
Oh and to me, running a Linux distro on a "high end i7" machine as a primary OS, is like bringing a Yugo to the Daytona International Speedway LOL
But like I said.. it's great for getting an OS to run on old or base (think E-machine) hardware.

I'm not trying out all these distros to choose one for myself. Although if I find one with the right combination of features, I might dual boot it on one of my own machines.

Hey, I never said you had to like one OS over another. I was just stating in my opinion what I prefer, just as others stated what distro of linux they prefer. I thought this was an open conversation?
Whatever Ronboooo

And the discussion was about Linux distros not Windoze 8. Great you like it. I'm trying to nail down a Linux distro with as much mainstream features as possible to put on some cheap hardware and sell it. That's the topic of discussion.

i like my games too, and my 6core amd isn't gonna get linux. but i'm not changing to win8 either. might be the end of the line for windoze to me.
there is a simple way to make xp work fine and never bitch it's not genuine. no cracks, or installing keys. just delete a file and put an entry into your hosts file. but, if it's too ancient for xp, then there are a few light distro's of linux as well that brag they run on ancient shit.

The hardware isn't ancient or that bad. Basically Intel Atom and low range AMD dual cores. It's not worth a lot of money is all. And it definitely isn't worth putting a $110+ OEM copy of windoze 7 on it. I've got plenty of XP licenses but again...if the OS is free what the heck?

Looks I might head back into the Machine Tool arena as a Field Engineer again. I didn't miss all the grease and dirt during my time at the airports. Got a reply finally to on of the gazillion resumes I sent out. I'm ready to get back on the road again with a job and be productive again!

Good chance. Can't retire until I'm at least 80! Living on SS by itself won't cut it.

I saw there's a posting for Cooper here in AL. Can't remember what city. I think they were looking for an Engineer of some sort.
