The timing belt will NOT be like the serpentine belt... But, like I said, I don't think it is out of the reach of someone with more time than money, a spare weekend, and some patience.

Timing belt is behind the metal covering that is behind the serpentine belt. The reason for the high cost, from mechanics, is due to most of them tear the front end apart. This thread may help you to understand better, where the timing belt is located.

I frequently have friends and family ask me to help them find a car. As a rule when buying a used car I find out if its an interference motor. If it is based on the year and mileage figure out how soon you need a belt and figure it in as part of the vehicle cost. If the seller has a valid receipt for a timing belt change great, if not don't take anyone's word for anything and assume it was not changed.
As for the original poster...
How do you feel about your mechanical skills?
Is the body and interior on the car really nice?
Any suspension issues?
Tires good?
Figure $500-1000 for a used motor plus incidentals (you will need to change the timing belt, plus oil, maybe gaskets, motor mounts, plugs....etc)
You have to decide if its worth putting in the time effort and money.

I do my own oil changes, thank you very much! My car will NEVER see a Jiffy Lube (more like jiffy poo) in its life!

So true, My Brother had me go look for a car two months ago, the guy listed the car as having a new timing belt. Went there asked for the receipt or documentation for the TB, could not produce it. He got upset and I told him then the car has a TB with 158K miles. We walked away. BTW - car was a Gem, clean, straight, no issues, ran great.

Unless you didn't want to do any work on the car, You could've made a counter offer and see if he would go for it? I've made some really wild deals over the years just because I know how to fix cars.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but just in case anyone was interested, I am sadly selling my dead 'Trep.
I don't know for sure that valves were bent, but I feel pretty confident the engine is done for.
I am in the Dayton, Ohio area and am open to any questions about the car.
I'll post this in the classifieds too, but here is a link to my craigslist ad for it: http://dayton.craigslist.org/cto/3472553078.html
Thank you all for the help and support, again.

That's a shame you are so far away. I have a 3.2 sitting on a cart just ready to install into something worthwhile!
