So I take my 98 Intrepid 2.7 litre for oil change yesterday, to Chrysler Service. They tell me / showed me oil leak in rear main seal, and asked $700 (Canadian) for repair. Said No, and took car home.
If there was oil leak before, I would have known from my garage floor. Stupid mechanic may have done something. Wonder how long can I carry on, as I do not want to cough out this kinda money. Is this serious??
Check that all bolts are tight (oil pan, etc.). Wash the underside of the engine - maybe use a wand-type car wash. Then watch for wet places underneath over a few weeks. Make sure oil drain plug and washer are tight and not leaking.
If you are not losing oil so fast that you are having to add a lot to keep it between the "add" and "full" marks, then there's nothing to panic over. The only major concern you would have is if you can't keep the oil level up and let your engine run out of oil. Check your oil level frequently over the next couple of weeks to figure out how bad the leak is. Not time to panic yet.

I intended to do so - i.e. check the engine oil dip stick, and also my garage floor. To re-iterate, I checked my garage floor for any oil spots as soon as I came from from the dealership, and it was clean (I normally am very observant in these things and check the inside of my garage, floor and walls from time to time - just a habit, and hence I would have known anyway). Think either the mechanic screwed up something or the dealership wants some unsolicited $$$$$$ - With the numerous electronic gadgets in recent model cars, I always doubt about their expertese.

There may be some very slight seepage at the seal. It's not uncommon and it may never get any worse. Many dealers are trained to find work during regular scheduled service. If you don't see any drips I wouldn't worry about doing a reseal. I doubt you'll notice any additional oil consumption.
It's a 98 2.7 just wait untill it needs a new engine and replace the seal then. I would not spend $700.00 now. Better yet dump it now and get something with a warranty before it starts costing major money.

So, adaptabl - are 100% of '98 2.7L engines failing? Because that would have to be true for your post to make any sense unless you have a personal agenda here.
