So, the hood vents right below the windshield wipers have slight amounts of steam visibly coming from them if I'm stopped at a red light for more than 20 seconds or so...right then the idle RPM's drop a little. There's also a faint smell of gas that comes through the AC when it's warm out. Is this something to be concerned with? I'm puzzled as to exactly what could be happening.

Nope...a very faint smell of gasoline. It doesn't smell like burning oil or coolant.

Hrrrrmmm.. I was going to suggest maybe you have a heater core leak. I don't know what it would be, other than to check for leaks in the fuel system (fuel pressure check after the car has sat a while), inspect EGR piping, look for exhaust leaks, loose O2 sensors, etc.

I didn't have any steam, but I had a dried out O ring on an injector that was giving me that gasoline smell from the engine a few years back.

There have been more than a few instances of the plastic fuel hardline between the back of the engine and the firewall cracking - kind of hard to get to.

Hmm - not sure. Maybe someone who knows more than I do can answer that. I do believe that the purge canister is located near the brake booster on the later years (near the intake filter box on earlier years - not sure where the production switchover was on that). But seems logical that an EVAP problem could be related to fuel smell.

I think, (If this IS a 2001 were talking about), the canister is stuck to the passenger side of the fuel tank. You might have been thinking of the purge valve?

It was just a torn hose.

Seems to be a fairly frequent problem on this car...this is the 4th torn hose I've had :O

The hose highlighted in blue was in 3 pieces, which was making a huge mess of some oily feeling fluid and making the steam. I replaced it...the new one is actually in the picture.

The hose indicated with the yellow arrow goes right into the coolant tank, and the hose indicated with the red arrow goes directly to the PCV valve.

Oh - that was a heat exchanger that you drew your arrow on, the PCV hose is common to crack though.

If you are getting LOTS of steam there, then you may have some other issues inernal to the engine...

Which engine do you have?

Are you loosing coolant (is the coolant in the bottle dropping)?
