Sup,

I've been a member of the dodgeintrepid.net for about 4 years, forgot my email address and couldn't retrieve my password.

But I love my Intrepid man. This is my third one. Age 17 I had a sliver sxt chrome wipers, chrome rims, chrome lining around my tail lights. I brought alot from ebay lol, had money to spare with my first job. 5 Months Later it got totaled, chick ran a stop sign getting out the way of a stolen speeding car and I took a bad hit ( Wooden electrical line pole )

Second One i had was also a sxt black, didn't add anthing all stock... I lost that one due to ONE missed payment 15 days late. Aww man, money was tight I was 19 living solo.

Finally I saved up and brought another SXT sliver, I put chrome wipers on again. This one has the stocked chrome rims ( looks goooood), sun roof, wing, and fog lights 2002. I'm now 22

It got very cold one day and I must have had a little to much water in my coolant. Because it froze and my heater core was leaking, I know this because it was coolant on my rug driver side thought.

I use to rev my engine manually from the hood, I can feel that fat hose coming from the radiator into the engine block build pressure with liquid, now i don't. I believe its my water pump.

Growing up I worked on cars most my life but never did crazy big jobs solo without my father. I have plenty of tools and access to more.

How can I get intrepid running again. I'm on break from school, I have about 5 weeks and 200 dollars lol. I can get more.

2002 Dodge Intrepid SXT 3.5 liter

Problem: Over Heating

Fix(maybe): Heater Core and Water Pump.

Question: How much work is involved? What tools to have? How many hours ( first time/ Mechanically inclined)?, How much money for parts?

Dealer called for 18 hrs to do the evap. in mine I did it my self because I was unemployed and broke! The job sucked but turned out good! I wouldn't do anything with out a book! If you are changing the water pump I would strongly recommend doing the timing belt to I have had good luck with Ebay! but check your prices they are not always cheaper!

Yes sir, I didnt mention that but I will also do the timing belt while everything is off. Makes since.

You're not feeling pressure from the water pump in that hose because you don't have enough coolant in it - the pump doesn't have anything to pump! You did say the heater core is leaking, right?

Has the timing belt and water pump ever been replaced? If not, then they need to be done - because of mileage and age. But that's not why your pump isn't pumping. It's not pumping because you don't have anything in it for it to pump.

Water pump wasn't too hard when I did mine, and I'm no mechanic. If you can fix that without there being other damage to the engine I'd go for it.

I have coolant in. I actually took the in and out hoses that goes to the heater core, and connected them with a pipe inbetween them...by-passing the heater core altogather. Just see will my coolant circuleate, which it is not.

The heater core was leaking heavy that's why I by passed it for now.

sounds to me like its full of air,, bleed the system and see what it does

self bleeding system IRRC. Tstat could have stuck closed - it happens. It's on the bottom of the drivers side at the outlet. May want to replace the outlet pipe too - mine's rusting bad.
If it stuck closed nothing it going to circulate outside the block.

I know its a 10mm nut I can open to bleed on top of the block. I bled it for 10mins a while back but nothing was coming out just speckles of coolant. I know it should atleast be a study stream of coolant coming out that bleed nut.

is there anywhere else I can bleed the system?

You said the bottom driver side outlet? underneath the car your saying, on the drivers side? I'm tryna locate that right now. That would be awesome.

My front bumper and headlights is loose I took a couple things out to get the the radiator. But here is my whip lol

Actually 3/8" - use a 6-point if you have one. If it's hard to turn at all, a 10mm will slip (too big).

It's clear you are not following the correct procedure. With that and a leaking heater core, it's no wonder your pump isn't pumping. Once again, it soulds like you have more air than coolant in it. You might have a bad water pump and/or a bad thermostat, and maybe even bald tires, but you have not done anything to give an indication of anything in particular yet. Give it half a chance to work. On the other hand, if it's due for TB and water pump, you need to do that. But if you don't bleed it right, a brand new pump isn't going to help you.

Ok help me here.

I tested the thermostat in boiling hot water and it opened up fine. I put that back in... My car has nearly new tires ( does that even matter? Really? With over heating) I also have 96k miles 02. My car is over heating but the coolant in my over flow tank don't boil over. Stays full.

I don't know if it technically is a self bleeding system, but I can tell you it certainly doesn't act like one. Our engines easily get blocked up with air pockets in there that need to be bled out.

Put on something to pump the air out of the bleed valve. I have had much better luck doing that than just trying to let it push the air out on its own. I just picked up a cheap hand pump that's a bulb with a hose on either end. Pump until coolant comes out.
