Parts Needed for 2.7L to 3.2/5L Swap
Make a reply if you think I missed anything.
3.5/2L Parts needed:
- Engine mount brackets (engine block to mount)
- Intake Ducting/Airbox or Aftermarket Intake for 3.2/5
- Heater/Radiator Hoses
- Oil Cooler and Lines
- Engine Wiring Harness (Must be 98-01 if you have a 98-01. Must be 02+ if you have a 02+)
- Alternator
- Power Steering Pump
- Power Steering Lines (?)
- Power Steering Reservoir
- 2.7L Downpipes Must Be Cut ~2" (see threads)
- 3.2/5 Throttle Cable (?)
The only real difference between the 3.5L and 3.2L is the power output and the displacement. The 3.5L alt will bolt up to a 3.2L and etc.
FAQ:
Is the transmission different?
No. It just has a different gear ratio. You do not need to replace it.
Does the TCM have to be replaced?
No. Infact you should keep the 2.7L TCM because of the gear ratio difference.
Why must I stick to 98-01 ECUs/Wiring, or 02+ ECUs/Wiring?
The wiring and ECU changed greatly in 2002. If you have a 2002, you have a larger ECU that works as a TCM as well. The 98-01s have seperate TCMs. Because of this, the harnesses are different. But you can put a 98 engine in a 02 car, and vise versa.

If you want to keep the A/C, you have two choices;
1) Re-form by hand the aluminum a/c manifolds to clear the
3.2's higher mounting position. The clutch/pully assembly has to be changed to match up to the 3.2/3.5's belts. 2) Obtain the 3.2/3.5's compressor,to include the manifolds. Other a/c hoses are a plus, too.
This route requires the system to be purged and recharged.
(Thanks for doing this! I couldn't get the time to complete
this swap how-to)

I reused my radiator and heater hoses. the lower one just needs shortened on the motor side and the upper fits ok. I also used the 2.7 power steering pump high pressure hose, but you do need the hose from the reservoir to the pump. Also the passenger side motor mounts are the same, only the drivers side needs changed.

I thought that you weren't ever supposed to reuse radiator hoses because once you take them off they will break easily or not seal or something like that.

Any second gen engine will work in any second gen car. You just have to make the electronics match.

No, you can not use the 2.7L engine wiring harness. A new one should come on the engine you buy, but it depends on how much of the engine is left.

Just completed my swap from 2.7 to 3.2. Sean and the Guys at Maxwell Automotive in Brampton On. Did the Job for me. Excellent, work... Got the engine from the wreckers to match my 99, only waiting for on A/c line. $5200 Canadian, taxes included.
Anybody in the Greater Toronto area looking for Mods or engine jobs should check them out. website www.maxwellautomotive.com
Sean was able to:
1)Make the oil cooler.
2)Cut down the exhaust.
3)Re-use the a/c comp. (replaced clutch)
4)Swap for a used Altr.
5)Replace fluid lines were required..
6)Modify the throttle bracket. (New one if necc)
7)Did the Water pump and timing Syst. (Better safe.)
8)Locate used Airbox.
9)Powersteering pump, resevoir and lines.
Now, if i can just get those last 2 O/T cheques!!!
Happy New Year!

What would you have to do to make the electronics match on a 2002-2004 3.2/3.5 to a 1998-2001 engine.would you have to replace wiring harnesses, cam sensor, crank sensor or what?
