Yesterday when I went to put my '01 RT in drive it sort of lurched a bit, then would not shift out of first gear, and the "check engine" light came on. When I tried to use the AutoStick the display lit up all drive positions as if they were engaged. I think this is some sort of same mode to keep you from screwing with it if there is a serious problem.
I got it to the dealership by taking slow back streets.
They pulled the code and said that it needed a new TCM.
Part = $492
Labor = $250
Total = $742 plus tax, shop fees and "additional overcharge"
So I have a couple questions:
1. Has anyone experienced this problem and had a different solution other than replacing the entire TCM?
2. Is this a fender mounted box like my local tansmission shop contends? If so can I replace it on my own without putting it on a jack, and save the $250+ labor fees?
3. Since I have to replace this thing anyway, are there better options that would increase performance? i.e. - modifications, differnent years of TCMs that had better performance. I have seen threads in this forum that suggest the best performance is in the '01 TCM with the latest flash.
The 02 and up are combined. ususlly located near the washer filler. I just had the same problem returning from the dealership (after they did the recall) in would not shift out of 2nd gear. I did the code check and got a P0700. So I ordered the speed transmission sensors. from galean Chrysler for $15 each. I plan on installing them and see if that corrects the problem. (it should)
I got my sensors in today installed and problem is gone. If your car goes into reverse, and netural and when put in Drive bolts some and only drives in 2nd gear the most likely cause is transmission input and output speed sensors. I figured it saved me over $700 in other work.
