Mehh... 2.7s are just sensitive. If they are taken care of; IE Mobil 1 oil changes every 3000, regular PCV valve checks, and timing chain water pump health checks, they are fine. Ive seen them with 150K clean as a whistle inside. If its already got sludge -- which would mean the previous owner didnt take good care of it -- then I would say drive it till it blows and swap in a 3.2/3.5. Other than that, meticulous mainenance will keep it going.

If you are going to all the trouble and expense of changing out the engine you might as well go all the way and put in a 3.5L engine.

3.5HO will be the cheapest. Followed by 3.2. 2.7 is the most expensive.

My 2.7= 138,700 miles with original parts.

The 2.7's that "suck" were not taken care of properly.

I have to agree........ I bought my 2001 SE brand new off the lot with 6 mles on it and the oil got every 3k miles from the dealership under the warranty untill the 80k and after that i changed it myself with mobil 1 full syn oil. The only thing i changed on that car was the tranny b/c it went out around 86k (i'm thining it was my fault b/c i never had it serviced), then it got totalled while it was parked by a drunk driver and it had 125K miles and the engine sounded and ran like it did with 6 miles on it. I never changed anything on that engine not even the spark plugs... the only thing i did to the engine was i went from a stock air filter to a drop in k&n filter.

ive heard enough about this POS 2.7L Why do you guys keep on running them? You know its a ticking time bomb, you might as well not be surprised when it goes and just be happy it lasted as long as it did.

Its an 8 year old car, with tons of KM, what do you guys expect? Not to mention it was the cheapest intrepid off the lot.

The site you posted it complete garbage, he has other versions of it. People on di have been bashing that guy forever.

Just do yourself a favour and get a 3.5/3.5HO and call it a day. THere are some programming issues ive heard of a while back but im sure people have gotten over them now, something about fuel management etc.

I'd guess people keep running them because most people don't have the time, tech, or knowhow to swap out an engine arbitrarily. Hence, if it's a 2.7, run it until it dies and get a new one.

That doesn't seem too hard a concept.

That said though, definitely get a 3.5 HO. Those things are practically bulletproof.

yes they are, i dont know if its because i dont do a lot of continuous long mileage but im at nearly 70k km and when i replaced the accessory belt it still looked like new, now cuts or signs of wear LOL.

Im just happy its maintenance free overall, this car costs me nothing to run other than these stupid high gas prices. I still run synthetic cuz i do so little driving and its all quick trips but otherwise i cant name any issues with them so far. Mines still somewhat young.

i agree,
but Most people don't know about this issue with the 2.7L til it's too late......... and most don't have anyone who can do the swap to a 3.2/3.5L so they pretty much screwed till it goes out...... When my 2.&l got totalled i know i wanted another trepid, but sure wasn't going to get another 2.7L engine.. I guess i got the good 2.7L enigne b/c i didn't have any problems with it.........
