Ignition problem

Well, the SE is being a little bitchy with me lately. I always had some trouble starting the car especially in the morning. I have to hold the key for a couple of seconds and give it some gas before it will even start... I am used to it, since all my cars have done that so far .... first I figured it was just the spark plugs, but I replaced those and there is no change in behavior.

It wouldn't bother me any futher if it wasn't for the strange thing today. I came back from work around 4, parked in the garage and left it there. My buddy picked me up for my PE class at 5 and came back at 6.15. My dad asked me to get the car out the garage because we had to stack some boxes there. So I turn the key and nothing happens but the funkey clicking noise.... so I figure great, what now?.... try again, more clicking,... try again, even the clicking died and nothing happend at all, except for the dash lights to flicker a little...
I figured the battery just died, but I couldn't find anything that could have drained the batery in a little over an hour, lights were off, doors were closed, so no interior light were on either... the cd player turns off ,when the engine is off, so I couldnt figure out what could have done it, but I needed the car to go back to school, so I took my dads van, parked it infront of mine ready to bridge it (what ever you call that in english in correct terms), I figure I might try again, I turn the key and it clicks again, and after a second it slowly starts up without me hooking the batteries together yet. So it starts up and runs just fine for the rest of the day and behaves normaly (what ever that means for a trep).

Anyone have a cloue why my car would behave like that since it has never done that before, and why it starts up this difficult to begin with?

LOL beats me, the 2.7s live in their own dimension. They are above and under the 3.5 if that makes any sense LOL.

It may just be a stupid thing like a dying relay that finally connected and off it went. Im sure a good mechanic can find your problem very quickly. You are also the lucky 2000 so be careful with that 2.7, so NO street racing with the NON-Euro PoweR now.

Clean your battery terminal and the starter ground and power cables. Click usually means the starter isn't getting the power to crank the engine. So either your starter is on its way out, or the grounding and power wires to the starters are corroded... So cleaning those terminals is a good way to start... Also battery terminal because that gets corroded a lot too...

odly enough I understood that ... the engine itself is in a very good condition, clean and sunds like new, just the ignition is bothering me. I appretiate the tips, I guess on the weekend I get to take some stuff appart and clean all the connections and such... can't hurt to do that.

So, my favourite intrepid turned into a very expensive paper weight today... As I start my car to go to the college it did the same thing as in my first post... well it did start eventually but I had a bad feeling about it.... didnt have a choice though.... and of course it happened.... compeltely dead as I wanna go home.... nothing happened.... not even the electric door locks worked anymore.

I got my dads van down there after my sister picked me up and bridged the battery... well, that made the car work, so we kept it running and a friend of mine drove it home with me and parkt on my drive way. We were going to pick up a new battery, when nothing happened again. so the same thing again, we hock up the battery of my dads van and sure enough the car starts, but this time the car would die as soon as you took of one of the connector cables...

so completely dead battery or alternator(??... im guessing since the german word for it is completely different: Lichtmaschine-lightmachine? lol) what do you think?

I know the guy above said this... but IMO... it sounds like a grounding issue.

As said above, Check the battery connections, clean them thoroughly.

If that doesn't fix things, then I'd start lookin at the alternator as it sounds like its possibly given up the ghost. Also have the battery checked, as a completely dead battery can play havok with the cars electrical system as well.

so after the painful battery removal they told me the bat was fine... so of course I assume the worst sh*t!... dead alternator... the part is 100 and paying someone to fix it a lot more since the damn thing is at a retarded space (like everything in that engine it seems), I was putting the battary back in and reinstalled the air intake when I thought to myslef what the hell and cleaned the connections and tried to start it.... sure enough the car starts without a problem at all... I should listen a lot more to what you guys are saying up here
