intrepid 2.7

i have 2.7 that stopped running. if you hold down that gas it will run for a minute.it had a knock that was getting worse,i thought i had a wrecked car that i could take the motor, but it did not happen. so i did some dia on my motor finding 210 compression in all the cylinders. i removed the front cover and oil pan finding a right upper timing guide broke off. can i replace all the guides and tensioner with out any problems.i thought this was a interfence engine but my compression looked ok. any ideas will be helpful. thanks steve

You can replace them. The only question is if there is any other damage n the engine that you won't know about until you get it running again. The only way to know is to pull the oilpan and check the rods and mains before you spend the money fixing the timing chains.

The knocking sound could have been just the failed tensioner, or it could be a rod and/or main bearing. The timing chain replacement is not cheap in terms of cost, if it was my car, I'd check the rods and mains first.

do a 3.5L swap, probably less of a headache in the long run, thats if you want to keep the car.

Agree with above. Before you change the timing set make sure your rod bearings are ok. I would pull the oil pump pickup too and clean it out. Make sure to replace your water pump along with the chain and guides.

If all else fails, a 3.5HO will cure your problems too.

thanks

thanks for the thoughts everyone. i do have the oil pan off so it will be no problem to pull the rod and main caps. i did try just moving the rods but found no play.i just think if the compression is 210 in the cylinders the valves are possisbly not bent. thanks steve

the valves will usually get bent if the chain breaks, or more than one of the guides let go. If youve got 210 psi of compression in all 6, you are fine.
