PROVO - A multi-sport athlete from Brigham Young University died on Friday following a violent car crash in Provo Canyon, which also injured two others.
The Utah Highway Patrol said just after midnight, a white car was traveling west along Highway 189 in Provo Canyon near Squaw Peak Road when the driver made a sudden left-hand turn into the path of an oncoming car. (Photos)
“The vehicle had little or no time to react. As a consequence, it t-boned the [other] car and... we ended up with one fatality,” said Lt. Al Christianson.
Chelsi Petersen, 20, died at the scene from multiple injuries. Petersen was a heptathlete at BYU, meaning she competed in seven different sports. She recently finished her freshman year with a career-best performance at the Mountain West Conference championships.
"Words cannot begin to express our feelings. It is devastating," said BYU women's track coach Craig Poole.
"Chelsi was one of the sweetest young ladies we have ever had on our team," he continued. "She had a tremendous desire to be successful. She wanted to be here at BYU, competing more than anything else in the world."
A passenger in the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital. The driver of that vehicle was treated and released at the scene.
