The ac compressor screams like a banshee i think it shot. the haynes book as usual was no help. Those haynes and chilton books should be burned.
In general it was a good deal and it runs but with my family in it it can be a pain riding with a wife, 4 kids and no AC is not pleasurable.
LOL my wife wants my trep. HELL NO.

I think you answered your own question.

In the vans you'll have to replace the compressor, because unlike the intrepids, van's use one serp belt to power everything.

I would like to just have a schematic of the compressor. dont I need to discharge it? Oil it to? I have never replaced a compressor I want to do it. I know I can do it I just want a better description of it. The factory book will do that. I just need the pages for it.
As soon as I find a PDF I will post it. it seems to be like a holy grail with some people. they have the book and wont share.

not sure if thats true with all models.

The 3.0L didnt run with one belt. It had a separate belt just like the 3.5L intrepid.

If the ac is screaming, the solution is pretty simple.
A few tests that you can make.
1. while in park turn on the ac, make sure its hot enough that you can tell when the ac runs.
2. If the ac blows cold but screams when turned on, thats a good sign.
3. If the ac just screams and doesnt blow cold then read below.

Ok so if 2 is true, then all you need is a new ac clutch, basically the compressor isnt engaging properly. My dads voyager had the same issue a while back when he had it in like 2001 (he had a 97 but im sure they are the same as the 98).

All you need to do is get a new clutch and just swap the part with the pulley on the compressor, its pretty simple, just remove the pass side wheel and you are all set. You dont need to discharge any lines or remove the actual clutch assembly from the compressor.

Just pm me if u run into any issues, funny i actually recall the procedure even tho i was only about 15 at the time. I do remember the clutch was about 110$ complete and only parts of it were used, you may have to solder new wires on the clutch, you will see a plug that comes to the clutch.

Be sure to take some pics for us.

Good luck.

CM

The vans with the 2.4L 4 banger also used 2 belts. The second belt ran just the power steering

Are you sure its the compressor and not the idler pulley? Because it is close to the compressor and makes a lot of squealling when they are going. You might think compressor since you start hearing the noise when you turn on the a/c, but when the clutch is engaged on the compressor it puts a lot more load on that belt and on that idler pulley. The way to know for sure is to remove the belt and try spinning each pulley by hand. Feel for any play or resistance and listen for any noises.

ac was a huge issue on those vans. I dont think the groove belts squeal like the v belts do. Its a very annoying sound, i remember our belt eventually snapped off one time and thats when the ac stopped blowing cold. Before then it worked but just squealed every time the ac was turned on.

They had 2.4L in them? LOL .... i thought the 3.0L was the smallest engine they offered.

Oh believe me they did. That motor might be good for a smaller car like the Neons or the cloud cars but in a heavy minivan, dogged to say the least. For unloaded daily driving it was adequate, but when we loaded it up to go camping I might just as well been towing a yacht, its that bad.

The mistu 3.0 wasn't that great of a motor either, or its 2.5L V-6 kin.

try to change the clutch first or is that out of the question?

you wont even need to recharge the system if its just the clutch. My dad and i didnt when we replaced the clutch and it worked very well since there wasnt a leak in the system.

The clutch as far as I could tell was stuck when compared to the new one. I made the swap. The system does not blow cold air still it is not as hot and the thing does not squeel at all. I tried charging it. Is there anything else I can do???

I had a 93 van w 3.0 V6 3 speed automatic. No problems with A/C, just the auto needing rebuild every oil change or so. It seems that turning on the AC or headlights exceeded the torque capacity of the 3.0 engine
