Questions about buying a car out of state!?!

So here's the deal. I found a car I want to buy that's out of state in IL (I live in MS), but the owner still has a lien on the vehicle, and his bank has the title. I want to finance the car, but my credit union will obviously require the title or a power of attorney before issuing out the loan. Assuming that that all goes smooth, what exactly do I need to have present at the DMV in Illinois so that I can get temp tags and registration and drive it back to MS? What all do I need to obtain from IL, before driving it back down to MS so that I can get it titled, get tags, and pay taxes on the car? Do I have to pay taxes in IL to get the registration and temp tags?

Hi Dino, good to see you again.

Youll pay the sales tax when you get your final plates in MS. Depending on Illinois law either you will have to get an "in-transit" plate by providing proof of ownership and insurance, or a 30 day temporary tag. Some states the plate follows the owner, not the vehicle -- those are generally states that use in-transit plates -- which are just meant to get the vehicle to its destination after it is purchased, etc -- not good very long, and other states the plate follows the car -- like Ohio and Michigan -- then you get the 30 day temporary tag.

Your best bet is to go to the Illinois dmv website and see what the law is.
