cooling system took a dump

'96 Intrepid, just under 260,000 miles, I bought it 4 years ago with 170k.

Yesterday, it spontaneously dumped all the coolant. I dunno if it was from the relief tube on the fill bottle, or what, all I know is the gauge redlined and the idiot light came on.

I haven't checked codes yet, but I will soon, and post if something comes up. But, this morning, I filled it, bled the system, ran it for about 15 minutes at idle, then drove about a mile through the suburban neighborhood. was at 3/4 and rising when I got back home.

Just an hour ago, I pulled the thermostat and checked it (seems fine) and refilled and bled. Idled for 20 minutes, gauge to 1/2way. Drove for 20 minutes, no change. Plenty of hot air from the vent, no a/f smell. Idled a few more minutes, drove it about 3 minutes at highway speeds, no problems.

Anyone have a thought as to what happened??
