1987 Omni GLH Help

So, we found ourselves an 87 Omni GLH, with a GLHS or T engine from a shelby charger and an interior from another omni, needless to say its quite a piece, but when she's running properly and hooked into gear, she screams around like a bat out of hell, if that bat looked like a garbage can. My friend got her tonight, and we decided to rip around town for a little bit, when it come to our attention she did not like to get into gear well, and started with some nice gear grinding and clutch burning, the vehicle smelled of burnt clutch badly, but we did not drive it long enough for me to believe the clutch completely burnt out and that's why we cannot get her moving. Engine starts and runs fine, but we cannot shift into gear, the shifter goes into each position correctly, but feels too smooth with no feeling of gears being selected. So 1,2,3,4,5,R no gears can be shifted into and so she sits in a parking lot for the night.

So...gasp, any ideas? I took the shifter boot off and everything looked in order and the cables were moving correctly and did not seem to be disconnected anywhere, i happen to have a jack on me, so we lifted the side of her up and i looked while he went through the gears and the shift cable looks like it is decently in tact and is shifting correctly. SO, my thought is an internal problem in the transmission, maybe a broken shift fork? Not sure any thoughts on this problem, and does anyone know about these Dodge OMNI GLH and Shelby GLHS cars?? They are pretty neat...

If the clutch is gone that bad it wont go into gea, try putting it into gear then starting it CAREFULLY! couse it will take off.

Fun car though isn't it!

I would put my money on the clutch also. The transmissions on the L bodies is pretty weak for the output of the turbo(assuming it still has the A-525 transmission). A popular modification is to switch to a A-555 or even the better a A-568. The 555 was found in TII (Daytona's ect.) The 568 was used in the TIII cars(Daytona IROC R/T,Spirit R/T). Also some good web sites for these cars is Turbododge.com, Boostedmopar.com and Turbomopar.com. I used to own and '87 Charger GLHS what a fun car to drive it sure would surprise alot of people!

turbo mopar is my main site for that vehicle now, two of the members were previous owners of the vehicle, and have alot of knowledge to share with me. its an 87 base omni, that in ONE WEEK, was transformed into an 87 Omni T2, a motor/engine from a wrecked 87 Shelby CSX that cracked the engine, so the lower block is from a lebaron. Quite the mix of car, and interior from a horizon, lol. Come to find out the up/down shifter cable? Is frayed inside the tubing and needs a good ol replacing, should be a ten buck part and we are on our way. New Q, anybody know someone that can tune these well in the NY area? It was just put into the engine by the member to run, and traded it for a busted spirit r/t, quite the fella.

No such thing as a 1987 Dodge Omni GLH. They GLH models were only from 1984-1986. The Omni GLH-S was a 1986 model. Only 500 were made and all were sold before they even hit the dealers lots. Now there was a 1987 Charger GLH-S of which 1000 were made.....

There were 3 variants of the Shelby Charger/Omni GLH's 2.2 engines...

2.2L (non-turbo) with 110 hp
2.2L Turbo with 146 hp
2.2L Turbo intercooled with 176 hp

Performance of the Omni GLH's ....(note: the Omni's and the Chargers are the same car, just different bodywork. The Omni's are quicker off the line compared to thier Charger counterparts because of slightly less weight, but the Chargers have a higher top speed because of a more aerodynamic body.)

Omni GLH ... 0-60 mph in 8.5 secs. top speed 110 mph
Omni GLH Turbo ... 0-60 mph in 7.5 secs. top speed 120 mph
Omni GLH-S ... 0-60 mph in 6.5 secs. top speed 130 mph

The Charger variants were about .2 sec slower 0-60 mph, however top speed for the turbo Charger (Shelby Charger) was 125 mph and the Charger GLH-S was 137 mph

All Omni GLH's were 5 speed manual ..... no automatic was offered.

So what were the differences between an Omni GLH and a "regular" Omni?

The GLH's.....

* Had larger, or rather thicker front and rear sway bars.
* Low profile alloy wheels. One of the largest on a small FWD drive car at the time.
195/50 15's on the GLH's, 205/50-15's on the GLH-S. base Omni's had 13" rims
* faster steering ratio
* stiffer shocks,struts & springs
* Driving lights
* The 85's & 86's had a front air dam and side skirts with red pinstriping. The 84's did
not.
* Only a 5 speed was offered. Was different than the manual in the base Omni's.
* Chrome valve cover.
* No carpet on the lower door panels where as the base Omni's did. ??? To save weight
or $$$ ???

All these stats are from memory. I had a 1986 GLH (non-Turbo) that I bought new. I was stationed in Fulda Germany at the time. I bought it through the PX there and they shipped it over to me. I had to take a train up to the port city of Bremmerhaven to pick it up after it was unloaded from the ship. I paid about $9500 for it which was actually more than the Escort GT's were going for. The Escort GT's were rated at 110hp also, but with a smaller engine. The Omni's were faster & better handling, no contest between the two. When I got my Omni, the Catalytic converter was not on as they used leaded gas still in Germany. I took it on the Autobahn and got it up to 112 mph (perhaps because of the Cat being off?) Course there I am going all out at top speed and a Mercedes comes up flashing it's lights. So I move over and he blows by me like I'm standing still... Lol.

Some other things. Dodge's Direct Connection used to offer a supercharger you could buy (for the non-turbo 2.2's) among other upgrades. These cars are easy to hop up. Check out some videos on You Tube. Chrysler continued tweaking the 2.2's by putting a 16 valve head on the Intercooled turbo version bumping power up to 224 hp! They put this into a Dodge Spirit R/T (0-60 mph in 5.8 sec with a top speed of 140 mph) and a Dodge Daytona R/t (0-60 mph in 6.0 sec with a top speed of 149 mph) These were the 2 fastest cars Chrysler made with the 2.2's.

After they stopped making the Omni GLH's in 1986, the base Omnis were built up to 1990 I believe. They called them the Omni America in the later years. They had to stop making them as they were too old a design to compete with newer cars.

Even after you fix the shifter cable you still may have a problem.

The cable will enable you to engage gears once again but the clutch smell sounds like it was slipping or seriously worn or broken.

Or you guys broke the cable. The transmission was now disconnected from the shfiter and left in a high gear. Then you tried to engage the clutch with the trans stuck in 3rd, 4rth or 5th.

Get on over to Turbododge.com you will find what you need over there.

If I remember right, the GLH's had a rod linkage setup from the shifter to the transmission rather than a cable. Was one of the resons it was hard to shift smooth sometimes...
