Exhaust smell in the cabin

I have noticed an intermitent exhaust smell in the cabin, even with the A/C on, when idling around other cars - at stoplights, for example. I thought at first that it was my own exhaust leaking, but when I took it to Midas, they couldn't find anything, and of course there was no smell. Is there some sort of filter that should keep out such smells on the car somewhere? The car is a 2000 3.2 ES, 142K miles, with new head gaskets, new A/C.

You might be due for a cabin filter, but if it's a potent enough smell(exhaust, skunk, etc), even that won't completely stop it.
Have you tried setting the HVAC controller to "circulate"? That closes off the outside air and circulates what's already inside the car until you switch it back. Left on too long, the air will begin to feel stuffy.
Problem is, you would need to switch to this setting before the bad air is able to get inside the car.
I think we all pick up an odor of exhaust when stopped at a light/in traffic.
