Air stuck on defrost

I am having trouble with my vents on my 2000 dodge intrepid. The air only blows out of the defrost vents. I have replaced the mode door actuator, replaced the heat & a/c control, unhooked the negative battery cable, pulled fuses to recalibrate, and it still doesn't work. I tried the self diagnose feature of the temperature control (which is automatic temp control, by the way) and I get code 36. Can someone give me some advice? The only other thing i think it could be is a broken wire from the control to the actuator, but can't seem to find wiring diagrams anywhere. Thanks!

Have you verified the Mode Door Actuator is moving when it's supposed to. As in running the ATC Diagnostics with the Mode Door Actuator connected electrically but not installed/bolted to the HVAC box?

Code 36 is common when you disconnect the ATC head with the battery still connected. You need to disconnect the battery for a few minutes and reconnect and run the ATC Diagnostics again to verify Code 36 doesn't reappear. If it does come back you've either got an ATC Head problem or a wiring problem.

Hi Ronbo,

Thanks for the reply. I bought a used mode door actuator on ebay and plugged it in and used the ATC controls to see if the shaft would rotate, and nothing. After that, I just put the old one back in. Are you saying I need to actually install the other one and then use the ATC control before I can tell if that fixes the problem?

Also, I unhooked the battery overnight and ran the self diagnostic test again and got code 23 this time. That is a little confusing to me, because the blend door actuator only controls temperature, while the mode door actuator controls air flow. Is that correct? Maybe this will give you a little more info to go off of. Thanks.

yes, your mode door controls air direction.(floor, def., vent.)
reset sometimes works best when the atc head is unplugged/ plugged back in with the key on.
you either bought a defective one, or as ronbo said, you might have a wiring problem.

I'm generally clueless! Don't go by my advice!

Maybe the gears in your Mode Door Actuator have an issue. The "Motor" itself responds to the ATC head and moves and gives feedback to the ATC head. But the mechanical Actuator doesn't actually move. The part that connects to the actual Mode Door.

That's why i suggested you connect the Actuator to the Electrical connector but leave it laying loose and not bolted to the HVAC box to you could observe what it does when you run the ATC Diagnostics.

Ronbo, that's what I did...left the MDA hanging down while connected and adjusted the controls and the shaft did not move. Maybe I should buy another MDA to see if I bought a junk one?

Maybe.

Remember you're not getting any codes for the Mode Door Actuator.. Which seems to indicate the ATC doesn't see any voltage or feedback problems for it when Diagnostics are run.

So the "Motor" runs inside the Actuator and runs fine with good feedback to the ATC but the mechanical part doesn't actually work. Thinking it's plastic gears inside the unit but as always not sure.

Try a different Actuator and run the same test and observe what it does without actually installing it.

HRMWRM is a more reliable source than I am for info and troubleshooting so I'd go by his recommendations first. Peva is another reliable source.

I'm just throwing suggestions out there as an Amateur Idiot based on the schematics and manuals.

Best if you consult them first.
