In the midst of buying a new Dodge Intrepid

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and I hope I'm posting in the right section (please forgive me if I'm not)...

I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid (with a 2.7L engine) that still runs great but I've had a really big issue with rust and it's gotten so bad my car is actually dangerous to drive now since my whole undercarriage is almost completely rotted. With that said, I actually have a local dealer that is selling a 2004 Intrepid SE with a 3.5L engine that I am looking at later on today.

I actually have an appointment at the dealership in just a few hours. However, before I make a decision, as much as I loved my Intrepid, I've been reading a lot about the timing belt issues with the 3.5L and I'm concerned about it.

I'm aware of the oil sludge issue with the 2.7L and have always used Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil so I never had a problem. I still plan on using the same oil for my 3.5L since I want my car to last as long as possible. I'm also going to look into rustproofing the undercarriage as well.

I was wondering what red flags or warning signs I should look for before I buy this vehicle. Are there any warning signs when a timing belt is about to give? Are there any specific engine parts/components that I should specifically check out before purchase? I just want to try to avoid any unfortunate surprises that could put any undue financial strain on me.

I have to be there in a few hours and I want to be confident with my purchase so I really appreciate anyone's advice. I am so glad there's a wonderful forum like this filled with Intrepid owners just like myself.

I imagine it's probably an ES model if it has a 3.5. The timing belt and waterpump should be changed out every 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. If your a hands on person it's not too bad of a job (about 3-6 hours depending on experience). OEM parts are best, but Gates seems to be the 2nd choice although all aftermarket companies seem to be going downhill. The Gates kit is a TCKWP295C for the 03-04 models, costs about $165.

there's no way to tell without looking at it. unless they have service records, plan to have it done right when you get the car.


Also, if they DONT have service records, great negotiating point.

Hi all,

Thank you so much for the responses. Unfortunately, I don't have my own garage, tools or the know-how to take on the job of replacing the timing belt and water pump myself. I can fix a computer, cellphone, tablet, etc. but I am no mechanic. I just know how to do an oil change and change a tire (and other basics like that).

The only thing the 2.7L engine had going for it was a timing chain instead of a belt. I wish Dodge built the 3.5L engine with a chain instead of a belt too.

If I pay a mechanic to change the belt and water pump for me, approximately how much should I pay to have them both changed? I just want to make sure I don't get ripped off. :-)

Sorry for the type-o, by the way. It's an ES.

The vehicle specs are:
Mileage: 86,986
Engine: 3.5L MPI 24-Valve V6 HO Engine
Exterior Color: Silver
Interior Color: Dark Slate Gray

Make the purchase dependent on the dealer replacing the timing belt and water pump. They'll go for it. Even offer them an extra $250 to do it.

I think its a solid 500 bucks for a TB/WP at a shop

Yes, but dealers charge $60-$100 an hour. Their workers definitely don't get paid that and they have to upsell any parts they have to get. So they may see it as a breaking even kind of point as well as moving inventory from their lot. Older vehicles don't move terribly fast at actual dealerships because they can charge more for them. They may just want it off their lot so they can get something else to take it's space!
