Block heater?

What kind of a blockheater is used on a 2002 2.7? the other day it was -37 C -49 windchill the Intrepid was plugged in and was a nogo, I felt the block where I think the block heater goes into the engine and couln't feel any heat, I checked for continuity, it checked out okay, I checked my plug ins and cords (found one with a built in light so I know I had power) I left it plugged in for another 6 hours, still a nogo the next day I had it towed to the shop to replace the heater, to my suprise I was told it is working, they just don't work well.
My chev Blazer that is 2 years older and with twice the mileage started and it wasn't even plugged in!

Its just that...a block heater. It just slips into a hole in the block...not as effective as the ones that actually heat the coolant directly with an electric element.

Is your battery, cables, and starter in good shape? Those are the first things to cause a nogo in extreme cold.

Yes the car only has 60 k on it the battery, cables, and starter are in good shape, I took a temperture reading after the car was plugged in overnight the body of the car was -26 and the engine was -18 they do work somewhat,

Your temperatures are something I've never experience so I can only advise you from my experience.

In -10 C. My factory block heater will make the engine warm to touch. Just a hair under freezing 0 deg Celcius.

Something I've not seen in a while is dual block heaters. Just install one in the other side of the block. Have them wired together in parallel so you only have one plug.
