Question Rack & Pinion Assy

Hey guys,

I was looking at my R&P they other day while I had someone move my steering from side to side. I noticed a "slight" movement/play around the mounting bolts/bushings. Is this normal... if not; I'm assuming the bushings need replaced and are they hard to R&R?

Me and toolman went threw this a long long time ago, I even have a pair of OEM bushings I could let go for less then dealer price if your interested.

This how to was back when I had a 1gen but it still applies to the 2nd.

Question, I replaced the bushing twice with it still not fixing the problem.. Whats behind that plastic boot? Is it just the rack with threated holds for the bolts?

Becasue to me, it seems like even though the bolts are tight I'm still getting alot of play.. I was thinking maybe their are threaded inserts or some other type in the rack and starting to get play. Was planning on changing the rack in the summer.

My second gen is different than the 1st, alot simpler with just 2 rubber halfs, a washer and retaining plate

Mine is doing this also. '98 with 115,000 swerves right on accel, left on decel. drivers tire is pretty loose, and the only thing that i can see thats moving is the rack area. Is it shot?

Things you need to check for looseness:
1. tierod bushing - most likely suspect
2. rack hold down bushing - check to see if the rack itself is moving. Have some one move the steering wheel and another person watch the rack. Any movement on the rack itself = worn hold down bushing.
3. Control arm - there's several bushings in there to check
