Q for the Pros, 41TE transmission

Hoping somebody might now if the 41TE in the 1 Gen Sebrings/Avengers is the same used in the 2001+ Stratus/Sebring 3.0 coupes!

Hoping it will be like our trans where you can use the newer one.

I got the motor out of the car and will have the pics soon that I have been promising, sorry for the delay!

I am going to say no. The Sebring/Avenger trannies are weak as hell and I don't remember hearing much talk of upgrading to the later ones. I have heard that the later ones are fairly stout. (The one's in the minivans anyway). There are people on those forums that go through a 41TE once a year, and they haven't put in a later one. Also, under the hood the cars are similar, but pretty different so I don't think that they would match up.

Last thing. Does the Strat/Sebring 3.0 coupe even use the 41TE? I thought they used a Mitsu trans on those. I know the Venge/Sebring uses the 41TE.

There are multiples trans on the 2nd gens between the 4banger, 2.7 and 3.0. Stick and auto. According to allpar and a few other resources the 3.0 2nd gens use the 41TE. I know it will bolt up becuase not only has the 3.0 swap been done but im in the middle of it and want to change the tranny as well. So the bolt pattern to the engine is fine, the mounts appear the same, the electronics share part numbers but the rest is up in the air.

Edit- Yea the 1gen 2.5(dont know much about the 4 banger) uses the 41te.

Are you talking about getting a tranny from a 2nd Gen Strat/Sebring coupe or a sedan? The sedans/convertibles are 100% Chrysler (except for the 4 banger), while the coupes are almost completely Mitsubishi. I know that there has been much talk of putting a 5 speed from a Strat R/T 3.0 coupe into an Avenger, but the sensors don't communicate because the 5 speed is a Mitsu and the TCM is Chrysler.I know that people have swapped in the 3.0 in place of 2.5's many times. I always thought that they kept the transmission.

2nd Gen Strat/Sebring 3.0 Coupe- Auto Trans not the 5 speed.

Not looking at the 5 speed but the auto 41TE in the 2g Strat/Sebring.

The electronics show an interchange on the part #'s. The bellhousing obviously will bolt to the 3.0 thats what it was mated to in the first place.

Now the mounts appear to be in the same location, I have to assume now it just comes down to if the 1g axle assembly will bolt in.

They have been using the original trans but for multiple reasons I not only want to scrap the one I have but the whole 1g trans as well. From what I am seeing they make our 42le look flawless.

It really just appears like nobody has tried it.

It kinda seems like you have 2 options, a weak tranny or a really weak tranny. I am looking on wikipedia, and it looks like the 2nd Gen Strat coupes don't use the 41TE. They use a Mitsu tranny called the F4A42/F4A51. The sedans and convertibles use the 41TE.

I hit the same dead end. The bellhousing on the 2nd gen 41TE changed and would need some heavy modding up top.

That sucks.

Since the Christmas spirit is among us, I brought you a present.

Here is the transmission in my mom's 1997 2.5 Avenger. I circled the bell housing bolts for you.

And here are the electricals.

My mom's 2.7 Sebring Convertible.

And here are the electricals.

I can get any pic you want of the Sebring tranny since it is retired until Spring. Not so much on the Avenger lol.

Here is my question for you: In all of your research, have you figured out what the transfer gear ratio is in the 2.7 tranny? There is a mod they do where they put in the gears from a 2.0 Strat (just like how they put the 3.89 gears in from a 2.7). I am trying to avoid taking off the cover just to find out that the ratio is the same as the 2.0, or the Strat gears won't work at all.

Thanks for your help
