2.7 Failure

The power plant in my intrepid has died at 147,500 miles. Oil pump failure which seized the engine, I'm told by my mechanic. My question is, what kind of price can I expect to pay to replace the engine? Used, remanufactured or new. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the site!

Used, the engines range from $1200 to $2500 plus installation depending on mileage and condition. The remanufactured units can run anywhere from $1800 up to $4000. I would recommend getting a reman, so you can take care of it....and will know what kind of condition its in internally from day one. Just make sure you get a good warranty with it. The 2.7 is a very sensitive engine, and you did pretty well getting almost 150K miles on it.

Just make sure if you get a used one its not sludged up and it would probably be a good idea to throw a timing chain and water pump into it.

Your other option would be to upgrade to a 3.2 or 3.5 engine, which are not as sensative as the 2.7, and are alot more fun to drive ... if you do it yourself $2500-$2700 max for the engine and all the parts to swap it in. This is pretty easy, search the site there is a wealth of information here about it, as well as many members that do it and have done it.

Hate to say it but your better off getting another one. Its just not worth all that money now to replace it. You can find intrepids for prices from 2500-4000 is pretty common. So instead of spending all the money on another engine, (though it's be sweet to have a 0 mileage engine) Your best bet would probably be to just get another

Cheaper way is to go to your local yard and take out an engine their if you know how to do it. Get a 3.2 or 3.5 like 32intrepid said, got alot more pep and is fun to drive. I'll be replacing my 3.2 with hopefully a 3.5 if i can find one at my local yard in the summer since my newer trep got 166k on it. good luck man.
