Gonna rering'er

Just figured i'd drop in and give a little up date. I did something to the engine to the concorde as stated a couple months ago. I gave up on working on my cars for a wile, and then a week ago i started working on my 89' caprice, got it all workin' nice and fine then 3 days later i tore up the TH400 B&M street/strip transmission... Amazing eh? Yeah well i decided to pull the block out of the Concorde and clean it up really good and throw a set of rings, bearings and regrind the valves just to freshen her up a bit. I hope to have her running with in the next couple days!

You sound a little doubtful. I have a valve regrinding machine at the house, and all the stuff to do the job. Monday i'm pulling the block. I'll get pictures.

the only reason i sound doubtful is because i dont know anymody to put new rings in
just cuz they can lol

I don't know what kind of valve machine we have, all i know is that it's old school. Also the main reason i'm going to rering the engine is cause the heads have been off for the last 4 months and the piston walls have surface rust all over them. The engine has about 180k on it so why not. I'd just pull the pistons and crank out and reuse everything but a head gasket set is half of what a rering kit is...

I've started thinking about taking my heads to a shop and having them cleaned up and the valves reground by a shop. I've herd talk about a 3 angle grind would that be a wise choice would it even matter?

Eh, a three angle is going to seal better, I've done a single valve on a Kwik Way valve grinder machine in college. I can't tell you a bit about how to do it now though.

I was going to tell you, if you do have a Kwik Way machine, and if you need parts for it, let me know. I live about 30 miles from the home office of Kwik Way... I may be able to save you alot by walking in and picking up parts.

Just an idea.

Thanks Cdmccul i'll keep that in mind. I usually have my dad grind the valves for me, and i've had him do two 350 chevy engines, and my 1.8L DSM engine...

Three angle has nothing to do with sealing, just flow. The undercut makes for a smoother flow into and out of the chamber.The center 45*/44.5* still does the sealing. hth..

Of course. Any cylinder head overhaul that does not include at least three angle valves and blended bowls is leaving out terrific hp gains.Done by experienced machinists on modern equipment with all the bases covered as to guide condition, spring tension installed height, you can't go wrong.

If your going to do that much work,why not bore it also?New bearings...Oil pump...and all the good stuff.Ill bet all of the gaskets just to do this job cost more than the damn rings!...But,I admire your spirit!Oh Hell...Go for it...

it's getting new bearings, and rings. I'm not gonna bore it but i'm gonna hone the block. I need to buy a head gasket set for it anyhow and that is half the price of a re ring kit, honestly if i though i could get away with pulling it all apart and putting it back together with the same rings and bearings then i would... I have no job right now and no car, I'm relying on my tax returns to do this rebuild....

Well i yanked the engine out today, that was interesting. I dunno if I'm just weak, or if these engines are heavy... It took me a little yanking around on it but once i got my hands in the right place i picked 'er up and set her out of the car, i noticed as i was starting to set it down my legs where tingling lol.. She's out and pictures coming soon!
