Angry 2001 Intrepid Seat Recliner, Falls Entirely Horizontal!

I have a 2001 Intrepid which has never given me any significant problems. However, while my wife was driving (with my son in the car seat!) the seat back popped and completely fell flat. I did some internet research and found the recall about the recliner bolt breaking which seemed to fit the description of the problem exactly.

However I just got a call back from the dealer saying that the bolt is fine and the entire recliner system needs replaced. I'm skeptical, mostly because I can hear the recliner motors turning and it tried to lift the seat back, and the other recliner directions are all working fine. The quoted cost is over $1000!

I'm curious if any of you have some experience with these seats. How can the recliner fail and fall all the way back without that bolt breaking? If the recliner system failed, wouldn't it just prevent us from moving it?

I don't think the dealer has any incentive to be dishonest with me, since Dodge would pay for it anyway. However I do know they are busy and I had a strange feeling about them from the beginning. So, would a second opinion at a different dealer (or maybe an independent mechanic) be helpful?

Finally, any suggestions on possibly fixing this myself somehow, even if it means fixing it to a specific reclined angle?

Thanks for any help

yard. You can even get a good set of 300m leather seats for a fraction of the cost.

Yup, junkyard. Also, car-part.com is another great place to check.

If the dealership is going to pay for it 100%, I would take that route however.

Thanks for the junkyard suggestions. I've been looking around recently, but it's tough finding one that matches the leather of my interior. Does anyone know if it is relatively simple to put my original leather cushions on top of a new seat / reclining assembly from a cloth seat (or damaged leather seat, both of which seem to be all I can find)?

Again, thanks for any help. I really enjoy this Intrepid and was afraid I would have to sell it since I couldn't afford the original repair. However junkyard seats are definitely affordable!

Switching the cushions is a piece of cake. The bottom is held on my like 4 screws, and the top is connected with two big bolts IIRC. I've done this twice. Took me about an hour to do both seats, and that was my 1st time.
