Found another, need advise, what would you do

Been looking for another Intrepid, this time for my step son...

We found one and went and looked at it yesterday. Its a 94 with 139K on it, 3.3L. They were asking $1000 and I had them down to $500 by time I left. Its been repainted (ok paint job) in Gray and has one rust spot on the passenger side drivers door. Interior is really clean but has no bells and whistles. Air does not work, has a new radiator and newer battery.

Heres what it needs...big and small
tie rod end
water pump (they have a new one in the box that goes with the car)
radio - I have a stock radio
2 speakers - I have
rewiring of speakers
antenna - I have
front cup holder
2 tires
fog bulbs - guessing

and the big question is...

I think it has a bad CV joint but I can't be sure, there is a brutal grinding noise coming from the right front wheel, its not brakes because I can see and feel that those are fine, the hub does not wobble and the strut is intact, there is no rubbing on the tire or wheel.

I have the half shaft from the car I just junked so parts aren't a problem. I'm just concerned that the bad CV joint won't get me home (40 miles) or it has wrecked the transmission.

What do you think, I could probably talk them down to $350 or $400

If the CV joint breaks completly can I still get home?
Should I be concerned that the bad CV hurt the trans?

Thanks

I'm on my 11th LH Car!

yes ......but not driving the car, once an axle pops your done.

never heard or seen a bad axle hurt a trans unless it tore it up when it broke.

it sounds to me more like a wheel bearing , they can be shot and not have play in them.

What says bearing to you?

What would you expect a bad CV to sound like?

Still worried about getting it home, it sounds brutal like I said and I'd hate to lose the bearing or axle on the way home.

grinding noise while driving straight ? c.v's usually make noise on turns more than going straight , most common noise is a constant clinking while turning. can you jack it up and just spin the right front ? id lay money towards a bearing befor a c.v shaft , are the boots torn on the c.v shaft ?

to bad im headin outta town , id help you pick it up with a tow dolly , just gragged mine home last weekend on one. if the noise it that bad i would most definatly suggest a tow truck.

Grinding all the time. I have no experience with CVs. You can't turn the PS wheel with the DS on the ground. Boots look fine.

I appreciate the offer, where abouts do you live? I live in North Riverside right near Brookfield Zoo. I hate to pay for a tow but the only trailer I have access to is like 75 miles away and it would take me a bit to get hold of. I just returned it to the guy last week too!

By the way....my buddies dad has a 59 Impala vert thats about 90% restored sitting in his garage for like 10 years now, its been painted, interior is done sitting in boxex and the engine is rebuilt. It will probably need to be repainted by time it finally gets put back together but he won't part with it...

im by harlem and irving , norridge/harwood heights area. i rented a tow dolly , it was like $40.00 where the cheapest tow was $100.00 .

grinding all the time while driving im assuming ? no noise idling in park.

tell your buddy to hook me up with that 59 :grlaugh: ..... i'd just like to check it out , i love the old metal , the guy down the alley from me has a old super bird sitting in his garage. nice lookin car. i did a ground up on mine , was gonna keep it all stock , lost track of that plan somewhere along the rebuild.

Yup

Grinds when it moves only

maybe I'll go rent me a tow dolly and offer the guy $300

If I could get hold of the 59 I would believe me, I'd also like a 60 impala coupe or a 65 satellite coupe

No

In answer to the question, don't bother with it. Even if you get it for that price, you'll spend a lot more trying to get it running, to say nothing of the time you would spend. You can do better.

I bet I can talk them down to $300 and its like a days work and $100 to get the car on the road again. That makes it a $400 car
