16" Concorde Rims on an LHS?

Hi

hopefully a quick question with a very quick answer!

Just wondering if there would be issues of gearing mismatch if I used 16" Concorde or Intrepid rims (maybe Caravan?) on an LHS - 17" original size rims. I'm looking at a car with dud 17" aftermarket rims but very very low mileage. It seems

"It has aftermarket rims that have the wrong offset so 2 of the wheels are touching the spring mounts ATM. With spacers it will give the wheels enough clearance so won't be rubbing"

I'd prefer just to get some stock rims frankly. The struts will all need replacing in any case I'd guess.

Thanks

Check the door sticker for the tire size. If it came with 16" wheels originally nothing needs to be done. If not the Pinion factor needs to programmed in the TCM for 16" wheels. Or swap the TCM with one that came from a car with 16" wheels.

Thanks Ronbo. Is the pinion factor programming done electronically?

No matter what size wheels the car came with, the factory adjusted the profiles of the tires to give the same tread diameter. Same tread diameter = same pinion factor. Somewhere has been posted the factory tire sizes for the various factory wheel sizes.

Here you go - factory tire sizes:
225-60-16
225-55-17
245-45-18
(somewhere the factory 15" tire size has been published - couldn't find it, but no-one stays with those)
Staying with those sizes will keep any speedometer/odometer error to less than 1/2%. At 60 mph, 1/2% error would give you 60.3mph on the high side, and 59.7 mph on the low side.

Also, here is a handy tire size calculator - you enter two sizes to compare speedometer difference: https://www.miata.net/cgi-bin/tirescgi

So, to make sure I understand, the TCM would need to be programmed to which of these standard factory size wheels is installed and then everything is fixed to run with that size of wheel. And this programming in the TCM is done electronically..

If you use one of the tire sizes listed above, re-programming won't be necessary.
