Winshield Crack

Hi

I just found a crack in the bottom right (from outside) of my windshield. It's just under 7" long.

It's Remembrance Day here in Canada so I'm not going to be get anyone to look at it until Monday.

We have temperatures of 21f (-6C) tonight and tomorrow night and I've put a piece of 2.5" tape with a strip of cut plastic down the center over it (plastic so it doesn't stick to the crack and worsen it when pulled off) and covered the whole area with some corrugated cardboard for protection. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts whether all this is a good idea or is it best left exposed? Maybe this will cause temperature variation over the windshield causing the crack to extend?

Thanks for any thoughts,

What is your thinking on why the tape and cardboard will help?

It's to stop frost getting into the crack and extending it
