Engine gone.

Fucking ass shit fuck. Mechanic called, he said stuff was melted together, the whole thing is fucked. I owe 11thousand fucking dollars on the car, probably another fucking grand for labor jsut to find out what the fuck was wrong, just fucked. My dad's calling up salvage yards to see what we can get. the mech said $7500 for a new engine with labor, coming from fucking texas. I am so fucked.

If anyone, ANYONE knows where i can get a new engine, and can help me install it, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. My dad doesn't have the time to help me drop a new one in, i'm so desperate for ideas now. Fuck. Now my moms gotta work extra shifts to pay off a car we don't even have, my dad's fucking heated, i gotta put money toward this (although they haven't said, its' my fucking responsibility, fuck).

Gonna go vent in the basement with a fucking pole.

Damm that sucks royally man.

One thing you might want to check out... my insrance company (Geico)... has something called Mechanical Breakdown insurance... that I believe I have. I pay a little extra a year for this. I believe this covers stuff like this. Im not sure... but its a possibility.

See this is why an oil pressure guage of any sort SHOULD be in all cars.

well chill there, what year is your trepid and what size _._L is it? yes you can find half life used motors thats better then nothing and they sell for 1600 close to new down here in AZ i would look for out of state. thats beyond way to expensive i have put in 13 motors before in cars. i can pull one out of a car in 20 min hehe. providing you have a air tank and stuff. but its not that bad i am not saying i can come down here to help you . but there are all ways alternitives to junking it. keep the car and just find a motor at a local salvage yard they can some times put one in for you i have seen it down here. ask some one whats the cost on a good motor what can you do to help me install it etc.. you will be pleasently surprised.

2000 se with the 2.7. The mechanic called 10 places, that's the cheapest he found. I'm looking around, we'll see. Now i gotta face the father, he just walked in. Wish me luck.

Thats the warm fuzzy feeling you get with a Chrysler. Drive them under warranty then sell them to someone else when the bills start adding up.

Sorry about your luck. Remember this lesson if you ever consider another Chrysler.

Warranty ran out 7 months ago, we bought it used.

basically, the car started acting funky, the oil light came on and didn't shut off. Aparantly the lower half of the engine didn't recieve any oil on it's final trip home from school, and, long story short, the lower half is pretty much all melted together.

I still can't believe this. I got a friend with an engine lift, but the weather sucks ass. If it'll save us 11 grand than i'll do it. My school closed down it's autoshop a while ago, but they may still have a lift in there, and other stuff, i'm gonna ask my principal, we're basically on a first name basis so maybe. I'll ask him tommorrow. As for finding an engine, looks like it'll be 2500-3000, if anyone can find a cheaper one from someone reputable, please let me know. And if you have any experience replacing engines and want to help me out, please let me know, even if it's through email and whatnot. Thanks.

you might be able to rebuild the bottom end on your own, it depends on how badly the bottom end is messed up..

Not a good idea. Those 2.7 bottom ends are tough to do right. I talked to a few rebuild shops when mine went sour and they would not touch one(something about them needing very carefull fitting and torque values). If the pros don't want to do it, I would try this at home. A short block from DC is about $4500.00 CND plus labour.

Yah, see something isn't right with the early 2.7L's. This shouldn't happen to a motor with under 175K. I think you should try your best to find a new motor yourself. In the meantime, I would write a few dozen letters to Diamler-Chrylser, BBB and other people and explain the situation without being nasty or derogatory or blaming. See if anything comes out of that. You may be surprised.

Interesting side note: I read in Autoweek magazine that BMW has discovered a problem with the M3 motor's (forget code #, 333 HP one) connecting rods. Apparently, they are to weak and can snap. They suggest letting the car warm totally up before goosing the throttle, not reving the engine up without load and switching to 10w60 oil or something nuts. Here's the kicker, they think it effected only 50 cars!!!! WTF? Why can't Chrysler take care of the 2.7L owners when this problem effects more vehicles? I think it is because most 2.7L engines make it to 76,000 miles and are out of warranty when they break thus not being Chrysler's responsiblity. I think that sucks.

But, I routinely put 150K+ miles on all my Chryslers so I have just been plain lucky.

HOLY SHIT! I had these same exact problems, there was like 5 other people on the boards that had these symptoms i had too.

http://intrepid.clan-510.org/experience.htm

And check this, there's like 20 people on there that had the same problem, second gen, 2.7L. WTF!!!

Mechanic said that the whole lower half was pretty much welded together. So much for that.

My dad had an idea, buy a long block (found one for 2800), bring that and the car to the vocational school and see if they will do it. I'm really good friends with one of the teachers there, maybe he could hook me up. And i'm sure they're always looking for cars to work on.

On a sadder note, this looks like it's it for the trep. My parents said that they'll probably replace the engine and sell it. And you know what, i can't really blame them. I've experience many small things in this car (well except for this), that just aren't very good. I won't be buying another intrepid, most def. I'll stick around here though, it's fun posting and whatnot, and you guys are cool. I'll keep you updated on the whole engine swap thing. I've kinda cooled down now, still wanna rip someones head off (aka people at dodge).
