Question Oil Light on More Often...What's Wrong?

Ok, so my oil light used to flicker on at very low rpms which i wasn't too worried about, but about two weeks ago it started coming on more and more. It seemed like whenever the engine wasn't under a load and/or under 1500 rpm it would come on , so I checked the oil. It wasn't low but a 1/4 quart. Then did an oil change to 10W30 castrol edge to see if that would help. It didn't really change anything, but now the light seems to b on almost constantly unless its 2500+ rpms. Im running a 2001 trep se 2.7. also i dont know if this anything, but ive been driving it much less often lately (i got a company vehicle). 148000miles all original. And i realize water pump and everything need to b replaced or whatever but i'm looking for insight different from that hopefully. Thanks ahead of time!

I have the same car (2001, 2.7) and I had the same problem. The oil pressure switch needs to be replaced.

Stage 1: oil light flickers at about 600 rpm
Stage 2: oil light stays on when warm and under 1000 rpm
Stage 3: oil begins to leak from pressure sensor, forms drops under car

First, make sure no oil in water and no water in oil. That said, I am guessing the oil pressure sensor is bad. Changing the oil changed the viscosity. Dont buy an after market one.Go to the dealer and get a OEM one. (too many problems with after market sensors) Easy enough to change yourself.

Yeah, got to get that timing chain/water pump changed soon! My water pump went at 80K

i would guess than you have low oil pressure due to worn bearings if you have done two oil pressure sensors and the light is still coming on. did you get them from the dealer ? if they are dealer units then i would say you are ready for a engine rebuild. like dudley said aftermarket sensors sux.

then i would try hooking up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and double check the oil pressure , i bet it will be low and your engine is about to die a horrible death. start saving for a motor rebuild. you could try to run some thicker oil like 20w50 , thicker oil will usually give you a little more oil pressure not much but alittle. its not fixing the problem, just masking it. good luck !!

Could be your oil pump getting weak or going out and nothing's worse than having to replace a or rebuild a motor due to pump failure.

get a compression check first, then you'll know if it's something major, or something minor

Also, if the oil pressure light is just on at low rpm's (idling, etc.), it can also just be a dirty throttle body. Happened to me, got some throttle body cleaner, cleaned it up, no more oil pressure light, smoother idle, blah blah.
