My 2001 Intrepid gear shift is stuck in park

I'm frustrated. I have changed the Break light switch and it is not working. The gear shift is extremely hard to move. Could this issue be a blown fuse or relay? When I wiggle the brake light wiring harness, it will allow the gear shift to move out of park, but it is very hard to move. I don't know what to do. I can't afford to take it to a mechanic. I need help.

It's time to replace your shift cable. It is probably rusted and stuck.

It's not difficult, just a PIA.

There is a copy of the factory service manual (FSM) on this site under Second Generation Service Information.

You can find the steps to replace it there.

Is there also a second problem with the brake pedal-shifter interlock?
