Question Need some help decieding...

I currently own a 87 aries.. YUK. But I am trying to deciede if I should purchase this 96 intrepid ES I have been looking at.
Here is the info on it.. it has 96000 miles on it Red/maroonish in color. pwr sun/moon roof, pwr locks so on. Last year the current owner had to replace the water pump, because it overheated (we line in AZ ..HoT), also at that time he replaced the timing belt. A few months ago he replaced the front shocks. And just last month had the front end alignment done. I have no idea if this is a good car or not and would greatly appreciate any guidence. He is asking around $5000.
My main questions are:
What is the life of this vehicle?
Does this sound like a good/ reliable car to purchase, for someone who has family?
Also any other comments would be GREAT...

My first impression is $5K seems to be a fair price. Kelley Blue Book lists the car for around $7K.

I would question the overheating event...overheating can cause a lot of hidden damage depending on what happenned (how long it was driven after overheating...etc.)

Might want to find out how most of the miles were put on the car...a lot of city driving or mostly highway miles? The car is getting to the point where the transmission could be a concern expecially if it has mainly been city driving. Might want to find out if the transmission was serviced regularly(every 40-50K miles). I know there are a few people on here with first generation Intrepids with over a 150K miles they might be able to give you some better advice.

BTW...welcome to the site!

i'm just going to point out the transmission like chicagotrs did... i had a 94 with 90,000 miles and it started slipping. if you keep looking at the car, ask about the transmission, and if you decide to get it, definitely have the transmission looked at. that was the main problem with the first gen's. but other than that, it's a great car, comforatable, and perfect for a family. i don't have a family, but eventually i will.

I really liked the intrepid when I had it. It was very roomy, fairly quick, especially for it's size, and don't let the 90K miles till a bad transmission thing bother you. I raced mine quite a bit (see old street stories), and although it would be a little slow to react when I put it in reverse when it was cold, the transmission was pretty much always behaving well, even with 154K miles.

my '94 is all original and i am working towards 161,000 miles. my trans is original and i have a couple mods done(intake, exhaust, etc.) I would have to recommend that car, as long as the tranny checks out.

i have a car with 249,697 miles as of this minute, and there have been no problems with it at all cept some front suspension, but since i got that fixed its been great, you could probably even find a cheaper car too, i got mine for 1500$ and all miles are highway. good .luck with the car man!

I own a 93 Eagle Vision w/158k with no tranny / engine problems. It's been a great car. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Just make sure the tranny wasn't damaged when it over-heated and you're good to go. You can probably get it for around 500-1000 less than his asking price.

Welcome to the site.
