Axel?

My 02 quit at a green light. Thought it was the tranny. When put into drive it whines really loud and the Speedo goes to about 10 mph. Any ideas.

See if the axle stub nut backed off and the splines disengaged in the hub. You might be able to tighten it back on as if nothing happened.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's actually rusted on tight. Probably going to take it apart and do the bearings and gears ECT.

then it's probably in one of the cv joints on the axle that has disengaged.
block the wheels, apply park brake, start the car and put it in gear. then look underneath til you see which axle has movement anywhere. the one that has anything moving is the bad axle.
