Colant Tank

Hi, first post and it about a problem I have

I own a Dodge Intrepid 2002 with 2,7 l engine.

The colant reservoir tank has cracked and nedds to be replaced.

Now the problem, This car has never been for sale in sweden where i live, (its imported from canada) , but different types of chrysler models have been, so my question is if the colant tank is the same in some other chrysler model so i can do a search for that instead ???

Second question is why does the tank crack ? why doesnt the colant go out through the pipe where the lid is ? , I have checked there is no water in the oil sŚ hopefully the head gasket is not blown , but is there a risk for that anyway ? and that the preasure from the engine goes out in the tank but no coolant water in to engine ?

Why i ask is because the engine feels a liitle jerky and when i trottle down a bit there is black smoke comming out and small black partikels and the fuel consumtion is high

the car has just run 150 000 km (apx 93 000 miles) , there is no sounds and it does not overheat , just a "ping" when coolant level is to low , no warning lights in dash.

any information i can get is helpful

Coolant tank is the same for all these models:

1998 - 2004 Dodge Intrepid
1999 - 2001 Chrysler LHS
1998 - 2004 Chrysler Concorde
1999 - 2004 Chrysler 300m

The tank cracks because:
1) It is made of plastic
2) The tank sees the full temperature and pressure of the cooling system (coolant)
3) As plastics age, they get brittle. Add and remove pressure from brittle plastic, and eventually it cracks. The cracks start out small (microscopic), but eventually the plastic splits open under pressure.

Make sure you get the OEM tank. There are some in aftermarket - probably all made by the same company (Dorman), but marketed under different brand names. The aftermarket tank is not made of good plastic, and will often fail after 6 months to a couple of years. The Chrysler tanks last several years.

Regarding the smoke out the exhaust, does it use a lot of oil? The 2.7 engine valve stem seals go bad typically around 150 to 200 km. They are made of good material, but the 2.7 cylinder head temperatures are high. If you replace the valve stem seals, the smoke and oil usage should stop.

'98 LXi - Later Concorde gages (black w/ chrome rings)/'99 LX - LHS gages (white) - HIR bulbs
