Thumbs down Don't wanna start a fight but......

Maybe I'm a pussy, getting old, or I need to sit in a car with some nice subs and listen to how good it sounds. I gotta say I'm pretty happy with the new 6x9's and Amp I just hooked up. I went to my local car stereo place and talked to them about hooking an Amp to 6x9's. Asking how bass would be and everything. Luckily his chat about not having much bass didn't change my mind. I love bass, I have a sub hooked up to my home stereo, but I just didn't wanna hook one up in my car. Fears of skipping CD's from the changer in the trunk and/or just not wanting to be one of those cars where ya hear a lot of rattle from their trunk when driving by them.
I didn't realize how loud 240 watts is when sitting in a car. The bass is pretty good, nice hit and vibration in the back of my seat. The trunk space helps I think. My "opinion" is that I'm glad I went my route and I think too many people waste too much money on equipment that's going to cost them more money (when they have to pay the ticket from their friendly law enforcement agency.) Yes it's good for shows but for normal people, now I feel a sub is not necessary.

Nah, I disagree to a point. About seven years ago I bought a little '84 Ford Escort Wagon that the seller left the amp and subs with the car. Ever since I've had subs and amps till now.....And I want my bass back!!!! You don't need to be those people that have some outragous bass coming from their cars its gonna show up on richter scales. But, to each their own i guess. I've had some nice systems that never skipped cd's, never attracted attention (unless I chose to), and I never spent a lot of money on them either (but you get what you pay for). I don't need some huge system, I just want it to sound good for ME, inside the car. I'm the one payin' for it! Also, I think having the right amp and sub set-up will add to the sound of your music. Make your music STRONG LIKE BULL! Not whimpy and distorted.(you know what I'm talkin' bout). You can see my proposed set-up in the Audio forum. It will cost some $$ but it's all top shelf, excellent sounding and reliable equipment. I wouldn't say it's a waste of money. It would be a waste if you have a system that can drown you in bass, but you only listen to soft rock. Make sure you get a system that matches you music preferance. Shit, I listened to some classical music when I had my amp and subs, and it sounded ten times better than without.

I love my 2 12" Infinity Kappa Perfects in a factory spec sealed box. But I'm not going to fight over it. Unless you plan on laying your grimy hands on em, then I'd just plain kill you. ;)

6x9's basically have the same surface area as an 8" subwoofer, and some better ones have the ability to reproduce down to as low as 30Hz if properly amplified. Its not really surprising that the bass output would be pretty good sounding.

It all depends on what you want in a system really. What brand/model of 6"x9"s do you have that can handle 240 watts? Or are you specifying PEAK watts instead of RMS watts?

Anyways......a decent set of 6"x9" with an amp can sound pretty good. Back in highschool a friend of replaced the factory 6"x9"s in his Taurus SHO (the good SHO). He hooked up just a small 18watt per channel RMS Jensen amp he had laying around and to both our surprise the speakers sound really nice. It ain't going to rattle your teeth, but it added definition to the stereo system. Shoot, back at that same time I had my parents '88 Grand Voyager LE as my car. The stock 6"x9" were going bad so I went to Meijer and picked up a cheap pair of Audiovox Silver Series speakers. After figuring out what two wires to hook up to the new speakers (the van had an Infinity sound system), I prayed for the best. Woah! These speakers hit! After a few weeks I had some more money so I figured I would spend some money on a better set of 6"x9". I went and got a real nice set of 4-way Pioneer. I hooked them up and they didn't hit at all. After trying to troubleshoot it, I gave up and took them back. Those Audiovox speakers were pretty nice.

Personally, I like to have at least one 12" sub. It's all about what you want in a stereo system. There is no right or wrong. Some just want to pound hard, and for that you need subwoofers. Some just want some added definitioin and that can be done by replacing the stock speakers with aftermarket ones, and even more so by adding an amp to them. Personal choice....ain't it wonderful.

6x9 were $75 and the amp was on special for $99. I haven't permentely mounted the amp yet, but I'll get some pics of if and where I wanna put it. They 6x9's are maxed at 200 and the rms is 50. I talked the guy at the shop about the peak power and rms. He said I shouldn't have any problems.

Tell you what... My car came with the premium Infinity system which was awesome. I replaced it with an Alpine / Polk / MTX system including two 10" Alpine Type R subs. The new system kicks major ass!

On the subs... Twice so far, I have had to take out the subs to convert the car into a hauler. I understand that with the crossovers, I actually had missing low frequencies that would be coming through your 6x9's, but even if I got the lower freq's going through my 6x9's there STILL would have been a world of difference between with and without the subs...

My .02...

I have a toggle switch attached to the remote turn on for my amp

on both my Bazooka tube and my new MTX/Kenwood setup you can instantly tell the difference the sub makes when you flip the switch

I am running the OEM Infinity head unit and speakers with the sub added on

For some people 6x9s provide all the midbass/bass that they will ever need.

Others, like myself, prefer more/deeper bass. The kind of bass that only large cones can produce accurately. The kind of bass that is also loud enough to really create pressure in the cabin.

You do make a valid point. You dont need a subwoofer to get more bass. Sometimes you can get away with a good set of midbasses. But, IMO, its not the best way.

On my headunit, it has crossovers for the front and rear channels of my amp. When I turn off the crossover on my 6x9's, you can definitely tell that it hits harder, and also that there is more definition to music. Sometimes, the bass will hit too hard, and then it is best to just turn the crossover back on and let the sub do all the work.

Well since pictures is down I had to go for a quick fix. The duct tape of the internet, geocities. I've uploaded the pictures, on the page they are small and their compression or image format conversion sucks!! The picture look like shit, but oh well. Take a look.
