Should I....

I'm not really certain where to post this, but I found a 2000 ES at a local dealer. It has 60000 miles, everything but leather and moonroof, and they're asking 9900. The payoff on mine is 4600. I have 86000 miles on it. My question is, should I trade it in? My main reason for it would be peace of mind in the engine department. I've been concerned that my engine may develop the bad sludge problem that everyone's been talking about. I am leaning towards getting it, but I want you to give your opinion.

Thanks!

Andrew

I just purchased my 2002 SE with the option package that gave it the split rear seat and power options, for $12,500. it was a rental (Dollar Rental Car, as per a dealer that I had run the VIN). They gave me $3400 for my 96 Intrepid SE with 90,000 miles in average condition. It has 20,000 miles on it so I figure I have another 14 months of Factory Warranty. Is it worth the extra money to you? Also, I financed $5,000 and they got me 4 1/2% interest.

I would say that it probably is worth the extra money to me, because I love the car, and I wanted an ES to begin with. I'll hold out and see if I can get them to come down, but the trade in value is less than I owe on the car, anyway. So, that takes away the bargaining power I have.

Do like I did.... Do your homework. Find the LOW blue of the car you are buying (wholesale blue book) and the (retail blue book) of the car you are buying and print them out and have them with you and make them an offer. YOU tell them what you will pay and how much you want for your trade and let THEM negotiate with YOU. Shop around with other dealers. They all buy there cars from auctions, so you may find a dealer that paid less at the auction and has less money tied up in the car, so can sell it cheaper. That's what happened to me. I mae the one dealer show me what he paid at the auction, how much they put into it to get it ready, and then added what I thought was a fair profit ($700) and that's what I offered. Then I told them I wanted ALL of what blue book said my car was worth as a trade in and they agreed. They knew I would walk if they didn't give me what I wanted, becasue I had a written offer from another dealer in my hand. Needless to say, they gave it to me (after a little whining about "not making any money on the deal").

unless you can get them to come down significantly in price on the ES, I'd suggest keeping the SE and having the oil checked mebbe every 3rd change for sludging.

Well, I did a little research on the internet, and compared kbb prices of both trade in and retail. The trade in on that particular car is around 6700. The retail is around 11500. If everything gets to the point where I am bargaining with them, I'll start with 7500, and work my way up to about 8k, at most 8500. If they won't meet me there, I won't get it. What do you all think?

Its probably worth it, but its slightly expensive.
In august when I bought my 1999ES 3.2L with 25K I paid $9900, It had every option, but ATC(which I added), Trac, Moonroof, and leather.
