Post Brake Pad Replacement Issues...did You Know?

Hey fellow Treppies...Just a reminder that I forgot to mention...I replaced the Brake Pads On my 2000 Base Intrepid before traded it in for the 2003 SXT. I could not believe the price of the Front Brake pads $140...What WTF! So I had the idea of why are the 1st Generations only $50 for fronts??? Chrysler uses a lot of same parts So I took my pads in with me and matched them up...EXACT SAME...excet one was rivits...one was glued on pads....Luckily my garage (2 1/2 car all done up fireplace tools compressor etc...) is only 5 houses away from a decent local self owned autoparts store that has been around for years and had the chance.

SO just to let you know...check it out for yourself...just to be safe as I did...and of course this has no responsibility on me...lol...just had to state that.

Then again Is there even a difference in the 1st and 2gen brake pad prices where any of you live...It was here in Windsor, Ontario at all the autoparts stores the huge diff...

Go aftermarket... I found pads priced as low as $20... I splurged on a $39 set which is probably a waste of money because my rotors warp every 15K miles anyway

The anti-rattle clips (which has an integrated wear sensor), which is located on the outer pads, are different between the first gen and the second gen. It has to do with proper fit on the caliper. The overall thickness is also different.

A PDF for visualization.

Ok, so I can't remember the links. Damn.

Thanks Warlord but...

What the heck are those anti - rattle clips for anyways...never had to use them yet in a brake pad install yet. When I matched the 1st gen pad to the 2nd gen pad they were EXACT size shape form thickness except one was rivits and the other was glued (2nd gen glued) at several parts shops accross town. So that is why I was curious if and why? I was stummped and still used the 1st gen pads ($50) instead for a good 1 year before traded in for the 2003 SXT with no feel or braking diff...

You can much better than stock pads for much less than $140.... Actually I have changed my brakes twice already on my 2001 and have yet to see Intrepid pads over $90.

Look here

My Wagner front pads were about $75 CDN at Canadian Tire, and it was on sale. Even the salesman said that was expensive!

The anti-rattle clip is there to hold the pad in place on the caliper which prevents it from rattling. Not all applications call for an anti-rattle clip. It depends on the design of the brake system. Our vehicles do require an anti-rattle clip. The inner pads use a piston clip.

The two pads you compared, where they the same brand and the same performance level?

The anti-rattle is almost identical, but they are different. The ARC on the 1G is straight, while the ARC on the 2G is curved. You should be fine using either on the 2G, but don't quote me on that. I have conflicting date regarding that.

With our vehicles, the wear sensor is built into the anti-rattle clip. The purpose of the wear sensor is to tell you when you should get your pads changed. You get a nice metal on metal grinding noise.

I know I have those two PDFs. I will find the links and post them.

Ok!

Here are the PDF files. Ignore the application as that isn't complete.

First Gen

Second Gen

The $140 pads at dealer are for brand new dealer pads. We also sell what we call a value line pad for roughly $50.00. Our shop uses the value line pads on all the brake jobs unless only the new ones are available.

Wink Pad prices

Just fitted a set of rear & front pads. Have found the Bendix pads to be excellent on the front ($39) and use Rayburn ($18) on the rear. These are from PEPboys who I think are crap at most things, but if you have a trade account set-up, this gets some great savings.

Don't think buying good rotors is going to solve your warping issue... I paid $120 per rotor about 8 months ago for KVR Performance cross drilled rotors and they warped in less than 15K miles. My current rotors are el cheapo Universal Brake Parts (UBP) which to boot have a 5 yr/50K warranty which I am almost 100% sure I'll be making use of when they warp again
