Question Help- Bad 2.7l

I am a college student and I need help. I have just bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 119K miles on it... yes its alot, but it is a fantastic looking car... engine is clean, interior is clean and only 1 ding on the body... BUT, for some reason it won't start. I have heard that these engines are HORRIBLE- the 2.7L and it is too late. I don't know what it could be. There is not a mechanic around for over 50 miles... and I was wondering if someone had any suggestions on what it could be? I have been ebaying and seen a lot of Dodge Intrepids with this engine needing a complete replacement!!!! I can't afford that- I don't think... I bought the car as it is and I was told that it might just be the battery... wrong! I mean, its worth a lot more than $2000.00 and I didn't want to pass it up. Any suggestions??? Where could I get a CHEAP motor if worse comes to worse. I have seen Ford Engine for $500 refirnished (3.0) and I don't mind getting a used one... but im not going to spend another $2K on an engine... but if I do have too, would it be better to put in the 3.2L HO??? I love the power that it has, my friend had one about a year ago... PLEASE, ANY HELP!!!!

Computer Codes?

Have you tried pulling off computer Codes?

Start there and work from there. Get yourself a Chilton's manual too.

your looking @ a min of 2500 for a used 2.7 (cheapest ive seen so far.. you can get a 3.5 for less (more power than the 3.2) but the swap is a pain.. theres a few on here who have tried it.
To pull the codes turn the key from off to aacy pos (but dont start) 3times , the leave it in the on pos. the codes will show up on you odometer.
alot of these engines seem to have timing chain/camshat crankshaft pos sensor issues, but i woulndt start buying parts until you check for codes.
Hopefully they havent done what the dealer did to me last time i took it in and erased all the engine codes and told me i needed a new motor.

What happens when you try to start it?

Yeah the 2.7 is in such a demand right now it'll cost at least 2 to 3 grand for just the engine, never mind install.

What do you mean by it won't start?
This might be as simple as a battery, battery connections, starter or starter relay and you are ready to replace the motor?

I found a company that sells rebuilt units to garages for $3200.They come with a 3yr 36k warranty(that includes labor),but they are very strict on routine maint(keep all reciepts). The last one I did cost the customer just under $5000 total.119k does not seem like much on most cars but we are talking about the 2.7.If you get the starter click but it won't turn over try turning the engine by hand to see if its siezed.

Come on man... don't blame the engine. Have you tried to get your trep jumpstarted? Does the engine even rotate when you attempt to start the car? Your battery might be dead, hell the connections on the batt might be loose or heavily corroded. I have more posiblities but I need to know whether or not the engine is rotating or not when you attempt to start it.

It's a foregone conclusion that right now he's acting out of fear and anxiety. Once that wears off we'll get some rational information.

As almost everyone has said, it could be a lot of things other than the engine. More info is needed.

I don't recall reading this:

Troubleshooting Guide

Condition - Engine will not start

Solution
Replace Engine.
--------------------------------
Find a mechanic. Come on, this is America; there has to be one closer then 50 miles. When an engine dies, it doesn't usually just fail to start one day. It could be a million things, many of which are minor.

Non starter

Always try the simple stuff first, like is there Petrol, I mean gas in the car? Then if the car turns over, but will not start, is the fuel getting to the plugs etc.

A quick story, 18 months ago I bought a 1977 Suzuki GT500 that was a non runner. The guy sold it to me for $140 saying the engine was fucked as the crank seals had gone. I replaced both spark plugs, $3 and cleaned out the carbs and it started and has run fine since. The morale of this story, lift the hood and start doing some investigating.
