Question Tire or Rim?

Okay...anyone figure this out?....I had some tires put on about 8 months ago in the front. Afterwards, I noticed a slight shake in the steering wheel.. I figured the place that put the tires on didn't balance them proper, so I took it to the dealer. They said, yes, the tires weren't balanced right and said now it was okay. So I pick it up and am driving home....still a little shake...arrghh....so I decided to try something...I swapped the wheels front to back.....shake gone!! Well, recently I rotated the tires back to the front.....started shaking again.....oh boy....so I get the tire balanced again.....stilll shakes. I asked them to check the rim....thought maybe it was bent....they said no. I am thinking that somehow that damn rim is either unbent or unbalanced somehow. I doubt it is the tire because when it was on the rear, I had it replaced due to a nail in it....so the possibility of 2 bad, unbalanced tires seems unlikely......so I am thinking the rim. Anybody had a similar experience? I am planning to drive to Texas in a few weeks, and don't want to feel the steering wheel shaking for the 1600 miles....it's not a bad shake.....only slight....but enough to be annoying. Hellllpp!!

how are you sure it is the rim that you replaced the tire on?

it very well could be the tire still..
you should take the mechanics out with you and show them the shake
then it is their responsibility

well, it has to be either the tire or rim. the tire has been replaced twice and balanced 3 times....so i am thinking rim.

Are we talkin' steel or aluminum wheels?
Aluminum wheels are machined and as such are almost pefectly balanced when new. Typically, the only unbalance is the hole for the valve stem.
Since steel wheels are roll formed, they can be out.

Here's an idea, place the suspect wheel on the left front of the car, leave it on the jack and start the car. If you have it, turn traction control off. Place in drive and take it up to the speed you encountered the shake at before. (1 wheel will spin at double the speedo rate because the other wheel is stationary.)
Is it doing the shimmy-shimmy-shake?

My $$$ is on the rim. I hit a very deep pot hole and bend my front passengers side rim. I experienced the same as you, shaking. They balanced the wheel and put it back on. Again, shaking. The tire shop put the rim on the rear passengers side and guess what, the shaking was all gone. When I am going 85+ I do notice it.

Remember an out of round tire/wheel assembly can still be balanced 100% but it's still out of round.
In order to figure this out you can make an educated guess by noting what speeds this occurs at. If it still shakes the wheel at a low speed it's probably and out of round condition.

It could easilly be an out of round tire, even though it's been replaced. I know a few tire manufacturers, Sumitomo being the latest I've heard about, have had some major issues with this. Take it back to the tire shop and have them put it on the spin balancer and spin it up. Watch the the bottom edge of the tire. If it moves up and down, you've got an out of round tire (or possibly wheel, but less likely). Like jfsram said, it will balance perfectly, but you'll still have vibration...

Okay...thanks...I will try doing that. It is the 16" OEM steel rim by the way. I just think it is stupid that 2 shops can't tell what the damn problem is with thier tire balance machines. One word: Incompetence.

I'm going through the same thing. A dealer plus other mechanics all tell me something different everytime I have the car checked for the slight shimmy in my steering. Its frustrating.

I had this very same problem with my B2200, I keep taking it to the tire shop every weekend cause of a shake at hwy speeds, they balance it everytime, checked to see if it was out of round and rim true. But it would still do it. Finially I stoped taking it to the mazda dealer recommended tire shop(seeing I just bought the truck), and went to a Tire shop that I trusted and had been around for 20 odd years, he ask if anyone has ever dismounted the tire, No was my answer. They took the tire off and it was full of that roadside tire repair foam, he was saying that after they repair a tire that foam is to be washed out, or it turns to a liquid and throws the wheel off balance, and a balance machine won't notice it. They washed it out, dried it, put it back on, balanced and never had the problem again.

Good info! Everyone should remember the gas propellant used in those fix-a-flat is BUTANE !! Be cautious when breaking down
tires that may have been fixed this way!
