Question Aamco? Ripoff?

Well on saturday I brought my car into Aamco to get the fluid and filter changed on my Vision Tsi and then the guy calls me up telling me that they hear a grinding/groaning noise coming from the tranny when they have it on the lift when there is no load on the engine, so they want to take it apart and find out whats wrong thinking that it is the bearings in the differential, so after much debate with myself I stopped by to see if I could hear it, which I could, well today tuesday, I hear back from them saying that they took it apart and said that everything looks pretty good just normal wear for the mileage and then he says that the diff. in the 606 trans. is normally noisy and that they saw that the clutch's look a little burnt up, I saw them and they look just a little blacker in the center of them than the outer edges. All of a sudden I'm stuck with this $1500 repair bill after not experiencing any major problems except the occasional clunking sound when in stop and go traffic. And with the transmission in peices and the pieces being worn I don't have much of a choice but to put new parts in since the old worn ones wont fit properly. Did I get ripped off? and has anyone else had similar experiences

Its not worth it to put $1500 into your car in the first place. Sounds to me like they are trying to screw you over big time, and I wouldnt take that shit. Did they tell you what it would cost and what they were going to do beforehand?

If you only told him you wanted something very specific done i.e. not something that would require ripping the whole tranny apart then you would have a case. You brought it in and asked them to find a noise. This being a transmission specialist, this basically gives them the authority to take it apart for diagnostic purposes. Maybe he should have told you that you'd probably have to put new parts in to put it back together, but they can't predict what it's gonna look like when they open it up. Next time, bring it to a mechanic you deeply deeply trust.
