Trans 2-3 shift weird

Intrepid 02 3.5 with HO conversion.

I was wondering if anyone who was running a special PCM without the 3.89 gear ratio gets a weird RPM drop from WOT in 3rd gear?

It will shift to 4200 rpm and then the RPM will drop to about 4000. I can actually hear (and see) the engine drop in RPM During acceleration in 3rd at around 80mph. (1st and 2nd accelerate normally).

I'm wondering if maybe my PCM isnt reading the correct engine speed in 3rd gear since I have not changed the trans ratio. I also have a special cluster.

Any ideas? Car runs fine, a bit heavy on gas which is why I haven't done the ratio change yet. Also, trans has what's bump from 1-2, if shifting between 2 to 3000 rpm, slight clunk too which I think is from the trans mount.

My first gen does the same thing - I often wondered it if it had to do with running a 96 motor with a 93 ECM (different compression ratio I think than what the ECM expects to see).

Interested to see what is found in your case.

Tq Converter Lockup. Quite Normal.

Full acceleration on mien does the same thing. More pronounced in the 3rd gear. This drop of rpms during driving has had many people calling it the phantom 4th gear and thinking these came with 5 speeds.

That's right - thanks Devan. I knew someone had just talked about it less than a month ago.
