New 95 Intrepid owner needs help :-)

My brother just got a 95 Intrepid 3.5L

He came to the toll booth at the walt whitman bridge and the car stalled and refused to restart.

it sputters a tiny bit as if it is trying to restart but never "catches"

sometimes it behaves like the engine is "resisting" and stops cranking normally. like it "fired wrong" or something??

fuses all good. we can hear the fuel pump going and we can sure smell gas so I am confident gas is flowing.

He said it had no spark (holding wire to block) but that is unreliable to me the sputtering indicates there "IS" at least some spark.

he replaced the coil pack anyway zero change.

it was running fine prior to this it DID have a teeny miss or roughness at idle. barely their you had to pay attention to notice it.

we have only had the car a week so we have no experiential history with the car. IT DID sit for the better part of a year.

suggestions?

thank you for the welcome

no the cel is off. it did have two codes but they were unrelated

12 (battery disconnected last 50 starts) and 65 Brake switch not seen to release or some such crap

both "soft codes"

the ABS light is on however in case that is relevant.

Well with no codes then its all guesswork but the camshaft and crankshaft sensors are common failure points with sudden no starts.

I would start with the camshaft sensor plug they are notorious for breaking and loosing connection and if its ok then i would try a new sensor.

seems like cam sensor IS the likely culprit. everything I am reading says it will do ALL 3 of the things we had happening (roughness stalling and now no start)

I just spend 30 minutes online and my google-fu has COMPLETELY failed me. I found "TONS" of people with the same problem and same solution but not so much as a SINGLE WORD describing where the heck this stinking sensor is.

I even found pictures of the sensor but NOTHING regarding where the frak it is :-)

any help :-) hehe

No joy on the cam sensor. we have not replace it yet but unplugging and inspection look ok.

with a volt meter they checked and we have NO power going to the coil. what would cause that? can I jump power to coil hot (I am assuming 4 wires 2 power 2 signal ??) to test?

WHICH relay is the ignition coil? we confirmed the fuel pump is good.

A cam sensor will always look o.k. Same with a crank sensor (well, 99% of the time anyway). It is an electrical component, you will have to replace it to test most likely.

I have heard that if it is questionable, if it is running, tap on it with a wrench and see if it stumbles or dies.

But visually, it will almost always look 'o.k.'.

ok found out which relay was the coil. it is NOT working but this is NOT our problem either :-)

I had him jump the relay socket and we now have power to the coil but still a no start

so for some reason the RELAY is not getting powered up ?? we tried 8 relays same thing no power to coil when key on.

suggestions on that?

He is going to the PNP tomorrow. I told him to get 2 of each if they are cheap enough (crank and cam sensor) but I am starting to get this sinking feeling its neither.

I am worried about the ASC relay or whatever it is not being energized.

If the cam or crank sensor is bad the car with not energize the asd relay thus no power to injectors/coil pack/alternator/etc.
