Otis

i love the otis system in my 94 trep and i was just curious if their is a way to increase the update speed on the "current" mpg reading setting

atm it seems to update every 1 sec which is good when highway driving but when coming to a stop/go or coasting the reading will just jump all over the place, my question is, is it possible to change the update speed on the OTIS mpg reading system or entire system itself.

ex. instead of in a scenario of going from a stop of reading 0 to 4-7-10-14-17 and then a coast causing it to go 17-28-40-52.. ect
to the much more pleasing to the eye 0-17 counting up in order

I learned slighlty about this kind of thing in a mech class i took but dont know too much, if the speed could be changed to update even at little as 10-30 times a sec it would be pleanty i think to give a smoother gain/decrease almost like is seen in some lux cars instead of the standard speed guage (of course not quite as good but you get the idea)

I don't think there is anything short of re-flashing the firmware inside either the OTIS unit or the PCM/BCM to change that...

The current MPG you are reading - are you sure that isn't the average mpg? Some OTIS units don't have an instant MPG.

thats what im wondering if its in the OTIS unit then i could get one from the yard and see if i can get the coding changed, but if its run by one of the more expensive systems id rather not waste my time and money

Expensive systems?

I don't know of any other 'more rapid' units there are in the 1st gen cars.

I'd bet that the more 'smooth' readings in the luxury cars has more to do with some averaging happening in the display's software than anything in hardware doing something more often... And I'd bet that the 'averaging' causes delays.

You have to collect data for a given amount of time to do the math on it. The ECM/BCM/OTIS is counting the clicks from the speedometer and averaging them with the pulses at the injectors - and then it will spit out a number based on what it accumulates.

You might look into putting an MPGuino on the dash for your instant MPG - but I don't know how smooth the readings are for it either. GOOGLE SEARCH RESULTS

Owners manual calls it otic ( overhead travel information center ).
Might help in searching for info about it....although I have been wrong before ..especially when dealing with 1st gen stuff.
