Upgrades and Insurance?

Anyone ran into or heard of any issues with installing upgrades such as ATC, OTIS/EVIC, Auto Headlights, etc. etc. and having insurance cover those items after an accident? Just kinda curious if you need to let your insurance agent know, or if it's no big deal. Thanks.

You will not be covered for upgrades.

Actually jesda, I think that he is asking about the stock option upgradees that you can add, not stuff like aftermarket upgrades like stereo upgrades and stuff. When it comes to aftermarket upgrades, I totally agree that it would not be covered unless you have speical coverage which is very expensive.

But for the stock upgrades, that is a whole different grey area. I imagine that if the car (say a plain jane 93 intrepid) had the opportunity to have those upgrades, they could be covered, however if your version of the car could have not had them due to your trim level, I guess that would be up to the insurance company and how much ignorance the insurance company has. Its not like that kind of stuff will get damaged in an accident anyway.

When you get insurance for your car, just tell them that it is loaded and ask them if those options would be covered.

If you have full coverage, can prove the equipment was in the car (recipts, pictures, etc.) insurance will cover it. There are limits and things like stereos often require having a separate rider if they cost over a certain limit. However, is there is something mounted to the car and it's stolen or destroyed insurance should cover it. To be absolutely sure, simply ask your agent...

Years ago my sister got her stereo stuff (deck, amp, speakers & box) stolen out of her Avenger and insurance covered it. It's a good idea to keep receipts and take pics.

It's always a good idea to ask you agent since things can vary by state, company, and coverage plans.

Thanks for the replies, I'll be sure to check with my agent to get the details.
