Question Changing to synthetic for the first time.

3000 miles ago I decided to go full synthetic with Mobil 1, I prefer to use Amsoil but it is not available in my area only through mail order. My SE has or had at that time 63000 miles and the conventional oil and filter was changed every 3000 miles. I first used Motor Flush with a new cheap filter then replaced the filter with a Wix and Mobil 1 synthetic, 3000 miles later I changed the filter only and added 3/4 qt of Mobil 1. The question is the oil which was in the old filter was dark? will it begin to lighten as time goes on? does it mean that the synthetic is still cleaning whatever crap was left from the last time I changed it?

it will be pretty dark for the first few changes, as it removes all the varnish, oxidation, and sludge that regular oil leaves in the engine. after 3 or 4 full changes... it should be pretty clean when it comes out at 3K miles.

Should I let it go for another 3000 before I change out the oil? I have already replaced the filter only.

Hi SHAZAM, why would you replace the filter only? Did you read this somewhere?

By replacing the filter but not the oil, you are filling the clean filter with dirty oil, so the filter won't last as long.

Synthetic oils will clean your engine, but they do it quite slowly. I've been using 100% synthetic for a year now, and my oil still gets muddy. Do an engine flush for the next two or three oil changes, that will help a lot. Your old oil will come out black. (this is good).

You should change your oil and filter every 3000 miles or so until it's fairly light in colour when you change it. Then you can go 6000 to 8000 miles before changing it. Just be sure to check the colour of the oil.

If you change the oil and filter at 3000 mile intervals no motor flush will be neccessary.
Don't let dark oil scare you. That's the oil's job to suspend dirt and grime until you change the oil.
If you oil stays clean that means the oil left the dirt behind.

I switched over to Mobile 1 Synthetic and have 2000 miles on the oil. The oil (on the dip stick) still looks clean where as the last oil change (and motor flush) was blackened. Are you saying that the Mobile 1 Synthetic isn't doing it's job?

He means that don't let *dirty* oil scare you. Black oil means that it broke down, and the oil itself is becoming dirt/grime/sludge. Synthetic oil doesn't get *BLACK* unless you really extend the oil change interval.. (which you shouldn't do).

It is my belief that you should continue the 3000 mile oil changes for the first 3 or 4 oil changes after you switch. the oil will come looking *cleaner* as you go.... (each time there is less of the old, cruddy oil left over). jsfram has always been saying this whole "clean oil isn't doing its job" thing.. but synthetic oil is proven to be better and it keeps your engine cleaner than regular oil.. but yet it comes out looking *clearer* than conventional oil after the same change interval.

After those first 3 or 4 changes.. and the synth that comes out looks pretty good, you can probably extend the drain interval to the "extended plan" that is listed in your car manual. i would NEVER suggest going longer than the recommended interval listed in owners manual. (I do know that the 2003 stratus 2.7L engine is spec'd at 6K mile oil changes.... so you should be safe to take a good, full synthetic oil up to about 6K before changing)

I've got 74K on my 98 3.2. Would I still benefit from switching to synthetic, or with this many miles would it be better to stick with the regular oil?

Also, does the 3.2 suffer from any of the sludge problems that the 2.7 is apparently notorious for?

I switched at 100K +... it can only help.

the 3.2 is a very bullet proof engine. It looses its water pump and timing belt around 100K.. but that isn't a very big deal if you change it before 100K.

Maybe the flush got most of the dirty out and now the clean motor is staying clean.

I also switched to synthetic recently. 0 to 100,000kms with Valvoline 10w30, then 105,000kms to Mobil 1 5W30.
Then oil stays cleaner longer but its still gets black by the time you drain it out 5000kms later.
I've also noticed oil that looks relatively clean on the dipstick will be darker if not competely black when it's drained out.
