Weight Reduction

Well I have done my research and really can't find much substantial to remove that would decrease the luxury side of this car. Any ideas? Looking for subtle things really I don't want to take out the seats if ya know what I mean. From things I have read that actually might work are:
Removing the sound insulation beneath the carpet and reinstalling the carpet.
P90X
Clean/empty car (always been done)
Removing spare tire (not planning on this one)


That's about all I could think of before making the car nasty looking. Any thoughts?

Uh, you want to reduce the weight of your car, yes?

P90X will help YOU reduce weight - but not so much the car.

P90X is a work out thing? Well crap someone told me it was a tuning company! Just kidding haha. But in the end less weight = less energy needed to move the car!

The only reason I really ask this is I had a little ford escort that I tore pieces out of like it was hot cakes and didn't effect the way it looked and got better mpg. Anyways I like V6 power with some decent gas mileage (about 27 average right now )

Well if you're averaging 27MPG you're doing just fine. Unless you remove things that have substantial weight, you aren't going to eke out too much more MPG.

Well once you catch the actual efficiency bug it's hard to shake. It's like the DIY phase when you figure out that taking your bumper off isn't too hard and you start doing things a little harder everytime. Anyways more then just the bug I recently got let go at my job and need something to fill my time. If you look at my sig thread you'll see like a week straight of me pounding out restoration and a few mods on my 300m. Now I have too much spare time and need something to do!

Really lightweight rims.
Barebones sound system (no external amps, just HU to speakers).
Past that and tearing the interior out/hacking up the car I think you have to turn to fiberglassing parts to replace metal on the car. The trunk lid and hood are very heavy pieces, but that is quite expensive or a ton of work to do yourself.

How many pounds difference are we talking with a steel hood and a glass hood? 10 pounds? 20 pounds? Even total weight, would there be much savings by removing that much weight in total? (not counting not having a hood, but what if we subtracted exactly that much weight in total anyway).

I can't see there being that big a difference. Now, wheels, yes, I can see wheels playing a bigger role, because of the fact it is rotational energy. Run the smallest wheels you can squeeze over the brakes, and then light rubber. The speedo will be off (because you ran light (small) rubber, remember?), but in the name of fuel savings, speedo is extra anyway.

Keeping your car tuned up, keeping your foot out of it, and not letting it idle to warm up before driving away is probably the best things you can do to keep the fuel mileage up. Adjust the nut at the steering wheel for best results.

(no offence intended by the 'nut' comment)

It's enough to make a difference, if you're drag racing. If your only goal is MPGs you'd never make back the cost of the fiberglass parts in a lifetime. I didn't mean to suggest that it's a realistic option here, but just stating that is the last extreme you can really go to without hacking up the car.

Honestly I would have done a fiberglass hood by now if there was a good way to attach hinges to it. Aftermarket hoods typically use hood pins, which I despise. Attaching metal hinges to fiberglass without having it crack during heat expansion/contraction is really difficult. I can do the fiberglass work, but I'm not happy with bonding metal to the fiberglass.

So in the end, there isn't much extra crap to get rid of that doesn't bring down the luxury side. Hm Interesting, I'll just unplug everything and go from there! Just kidding, but decent information. Thanks.

To really improve your gas mileage you can (in increasing order of effectiveness):
- Use tires that are too small, this will spin the speedometer/odometer faster
- Lift tire off the ground, run at a light idle in 4th gear

Dumb question here: Say you ran with smaller tires. Wouldn't that would make the engine RPMs higher? Wouldn't that negate any fuel savings?

I believe that the increased rpm will also correlate to lower fuel consumption. Consider this: in neutral, it takes very little throttle (fuel) to have very high rpm (no load)... But the same throttle level in gear results in very little rpm.
