nasty black insulation

in my 96 trep the insulation is all cracked and melty does it need to be there or can i rip it out?

I presume you are referring to the plastic shield over spark plug wires. Throw it out. You don't need it. You can replace it if you want to.

Its sound deadening material if you really want to remove it you can but you may hear more road noise then

You shouldn't drive with the stereo that loud, because not only is it bad for your ears, it also makes it harder to hear the Semi Truck about to clip the rear edge of your car. (learned from a friends experience, thankfully he was OK, but the car was totaled)

And taking out the sound deadener/ insulation... you're inviting rattles and all around shitty sounds to the party..... Leave it.. or replace with layers of dynamat or equivalent..

It's there for a reason..

yea dont want to rip something out just to have to go back to ghetto rig it back in because it now vibrates like hell at whatever rpm... i would say just cut off the excess that has melted im still not sure what area ur talking about, weather under the deck or the trunk liner.
