Looks like I'm coming back folks....

Well, after a year in the Jeep and the worst gas mileage a poor fella like me could handle, I may be coming back to the Intrepid.

I've been shopping used car values and I've found that the best bang for the buck is the Intrepid.

Did you know a 99 SE with 65,000 miles is only worth $5,500? But a 99 Civic with the same amount of miles is worth $7,400? That's a big difference from a large comfy car to an econobox.

Sure, the LH is going to get slightly worse mpg, but after coming from around an average of 15 mpg...ANYTHING is better. Granted, I probably never should have gotten rid of the original Intrepid....but I also didn't know my commute was going to get soooo much longer at the time. So, no regrets with the Jeep, she has been just as trouble free as my Intrepid was and introduced me to the great joy of going off the beaten path.

Soooo...to make a long story short, after going to the Queens softball meet and re-falling in love with the LH line, I've decided that the most likely choice is going to be another 2nd Gen Intrepid. The little lady LOVED them (she had never really seen one before up close) and really there isn't a better value out there.

The only problem is finding one that has been taken care of. There aren't many people who are as anal as I am when it comes to maintenance (ask Intrepidude! ;) ) So, I may skip over the 2.7L and pay the extra couple of bucks and get an ES with a 3.2, which has a little bit better reliability in the long run.

So, I may be showing up to the meets in an Intrepid again! Wish me luck!

Ummmmm, how about a 2002 ES or an SXT with the 3.5??? R/T would probably be difficult to find.

As much as I would love to have one of those, I'm trying to stay under/around $6K. That way, I don't have to pay anything out of pocket after I sell the Jeep.

I don't understand what your point is. If you bought that Civic you would probably get about 30miles per gallon... that would double your gas mileage vs the Jeep. If you buy an Intrepid (I was only getting 21 in mixed not much traffic driving) then you'll probably get 20 mpg which is only 5miles better than the Jeep.

I'd keep the Jeep if I were you. Is it that you don't like the Jeep? Don't like having a car payment? Can't really be the gas because there isn't that much difference IMOP.

Actually the traffic issue is a moot point. The times I drive (6am and 7 pm) there is no traffic...so the mileage actually jumps to around 24-25 (what I was getting in my 99) with the Intrepid. 15 mpg is what I'm getting with NO traffic in the Jeep.

I love the Jeep...But, between the gas mileage and yes, the payments, I want something cheap and something I'm happy with. I don't believe I'd be happy with a Civic since I tend to like mid sized vehicles (I wasn't too impressed with my sis-in-law's Civic). BUT, I'm most ceratinly keeping my options open.

The major reason besides mpg is the car payment. I didn't mention earlier that starting shortly, I will be paying $140 per month in tolls in addition to doubling, if not tripling my miles driven. (Friggin NYC!) That's half a car payment for me. So, the Jeep will be going regardless of mpg.

Plan on 21 with the ES because that's what I got consistantly winter/summer driving into work mostly highway at 6am no traffic and then using the car to run errands locally at night.

I don't know if this is an issue for you, but I also found the Intrepid to be a very difficult car to parallel park in the city not only because of the length but because of the way the front slopes off so you can't tell where it ends and the trunk is so high you can't see the car behind you.

I know about the bad resale first hand so I am sure bang for the buck you are right the Intrepid is a good deal.

I really like your Jeep ... wonder if you'll be happy going back to an Intrepid?

Oops, sorry if I made it sound like I work in the city. Actually I'll still be working on the Island, but moving off the island (hence the tolls for the bridges). So, same old parking lot for me!

I love the Jeep and trust me it does kill me to get rid of it. But, where I'm moving..I'm limited to parking for one vehicle only. That, the tolls and the paltry gas mileage all add up to a change.

I really do like the Intrepid, I think that's obvious from my continued participation in these forums. It also killed me to get rid of my old car and I've always said I'd get another. It may not be the most practical car or the best quality...but it would be something I'd most certainly be content with.

Again, I am keeping my options open with other vehicles. But, for the dollar...you can't find a better deal then an LH. Power everything / Auto / AC / etc... all stock for under $6K? Amazing!

parallel parking a trep is simple...if you can't park a car the size of the trep in a normal spot you shouldn't be driving!! He knows what the intrepid is like and I'm sure he'll like the improved comfort!!

I do 80 miles a day round trip. I used to do 100. Yes, I work in Long Island but don't live there. The gas milage of my Trep is fine. I average out at about 26 mpg. Don't listen to the Trep haters.

You try to get away...but they keep pulling you back in...."

I can take apart an Intrepid and put it back together in 12 minutes or less (with parts to spare! )

Yeah, but would you really want a civic? Well I guess some people might, but I would rather not, considering they look like a whole bunch of nothing, and in my opinion (Well I actually did own one) don't have much for personallity... It sucks

If you take your time and do some hunting you can find a good deal. We got a 99' SE with 55,000 miles for $5000. And it's in great shape, the interior is still like new. The outside of the car is in good shape as well with your minor little rock dings on the hood and few little scrathes.
