Post RPM Limiter?

Hey guys, Last week before I was moving into college I went to this big field and thought I would mess around. I tried reving the engine but it would stop at 4 RPM, the car would start to jerk as I kept giving it more gas and the tachometer stayed at 4 RPM. Is there an explanation for this? Thx

please tell me that by "mess around" you don't mean that you intended to rev the mtor to redline and then dump it into drive
