How Amsoil saved me money

I just bought a 99 Intrepid (2.7) and don't know a whole lot about these cars. Since I do know how to scour the net for info, I went hunting for the best info on maintenance for my new ride. I started doing some research into engine oils. I found that a premium synthetic would be the best thing to use. I also discovered that a higher capacity filter (capacity to hold contaminants) was also better for my engine. I have now chosen Amsoil 0w-30 series 2000 and their full flow filter. Then I did the math. I was shocked to learn how much money would actually be saved by using Amsoil. I did the comparison against what I have been using in my other cars. Castrol syntec blend and fram filters changed every 3K. The Amsoil has a change interval of 35K(!!). The Amsoil filter has an interval of 12.5K.

Dino:

(Wal-Mart prices)
5 quart bottle : $10.00
Fram filter : $ 3.00

Total cost for 12 dino oil changes : $156.00 +taxes.

Amsoil:

(Online store)
2 one gallon bottles (8 quarts) : $63.10
3 filters : $34.65
Prefered customer deal : $10.00
Prefered customer discount (-15%) : -$14.66
Shipping : $7.77

Total cost for Amsoil + 3 filter changes : 100.86 + taxes

Total savings : $55.14

Knowing that my engine is being lubed by one the best oils in the world : Priceless

:p

And than when your engine goes BOOM because you waited 35k miles to change your oil, you will than realize what a savings indeed (especially with that 2.7L engine).

The oil would of course be examined at sane intervals. I'm not talking about a "set it and forget it" type of thing here. If I use a quality filter, check the oil regularly, change the filter before it's recomended interval, lose/replace a quart when changing the filter, this type of oil may very well last 35K. I would replace the oil if it was in a degraded state, Dino or synth.

35K? Never! I'll spend the extra money (using a good 10W30) and change the oil every 3k - 5k km (1800mi - 3200mi).

You'll likely hit 1 year before 25K or even 35K. The Amsoil route is the way to go in my opinion, been doing it since 1985 and have saved tons of money over the years.

I think my whole point here was that using quality products will end up saving you money, time, and headaches. If a quality synth oil will reduce engine wear, then why not use it? Hell, you might even see other benefits. Improved gas milage. Plus, longer drain intervals are better for the environment. There is certainly no "cure all" for things mechanical. Just trying to put the odds in my favor.

Oh, don't forget the "coolness" factor of saying that you use "$9.00 a quart" oil!! LOL
