Radar Detectors & Laser Scramblers

So far everytime I got pulled over for speeding I've been able to talk my way out of a ticket. Yet I'm wondering how long that'll last.

So I'm curious to see if anyone out there is using a lazer scrambler and/or radar detector?

I've been doing plenty of research and the best lazer scambler out there appears to be the Escort ZR3:
http://www.escortstore.com/zr3.htm

The big plus is that it links up with the Passport 8500 radar detector. http://www.escortstore.com/8500.htm

I know I can get the ZR3 for about $300 and the Passport 8500 for about $250. But does anyone know if it's all worth the $550?

Yes the lazer shifter does have 99% efficiency according to 3rd party tests, but then I never got pulled over with a lazer. (Lazers are a bitch to use cause you got to aim them exactly at the headlights/license plate.

But then are radar detectors any use? "BEEP You just got busted." doesn't help much does it?

Any suggestions/experiences are appreciated.

usually cops are shooting people before you get there, and they pick it up about 1 mile out, so you can know they're around before you get there... i'm actually thinking about getting a radar jammer. no police depts use laser near me.
Anyone know if those are useful in real close range? the last time i got pulled over, was by a cop on foot who jumped out in front of my car while pulling others over... god it sucks having to wait for him to walk back to his cruiser and fill out all the paperwork for 4 cars...

Best site I ever found for radar detectors and disillusion of the "radar jammer" hype:

http://www.radartest.com/

There is NO such thing as a radar jammer though. None have ever worked better than pure luck.
(Note: This isn't exactly true. There ARE jammers out there that work. But they're illegal and you can't buy them. Only legal jammers are passive, and passive jammers don't work. Active jammers detect the radar signal and send a return signal back with an error. But since you're transmiting on the radar frequency it's illegal by FCC regulations. (Same as cellphone jammers) Worse yet because you'll be transmiting a powerful enough signal to drown the original one, you'll set off radar guns within about a mile radius. Needless to say that'll get some attention.)

Lazer scarmblers on the other hand do work. All they do is blast the lazer with a powefull flash drowning out the original signal.

Warlord with all due respect, I don't believe for a second that you do not speed.

While your advice is sound I find it very hard to follow.

Moreover, I for one, have NO desire to fund the county by paying ridiculous tickets. Nor do I intend to follow the purposley low speed limits which are desgined to do nothing more than produce revenue. Do I intend to blast by school buses at 120mph? No. Do I intend to do 100 in a 25mph zone past a playground? No. Do I intend to go as fast as I feel reasonable given the conditions regardless of the speed limit. Yes.

If you don't believe me thats alright, you seemed to have a trust issue from the start. But then would you trust the National Motorist Association (http://www.motorists.com/). Here is their stand on speed limits: http://www.motorists.org/issues/speed/index.html

Feel free to also read about insurance companies and radar guns, trafic calming etc.

best detector period: http://www.valentineone.com/

I am not very familiar with the laser scramblers...the one ticket I have gotten was with laser from an overpass in Wisconsin.

Speeding tips...radar detectors are just about useless if you are the only car on the road. Most cops these days use instant on so you have no time to react. You really need other traffic so you pick him up shooting other cars before he gets to you. So if you are in a rural area with not much traffic a detector may not be very effective...and may even cause you to get more tickets...because you will likely speed more and you will not talk your way out of a ticket with a detector sitting on your dash.

Take small K blips seriously...if you get one small blip from the detector that is likely a cop up ahead using instant on other traffic...slow down. If you get a laser blip slam on your brakes because a car within 50 feet or so of you just got laser-ed (it is pure luck to even pick up stray laser signal).

Still the best radar detector are your own two eyes. For a cop to detect you...they have to be closer than a 1/4 mile...on the highway you can easily see a mile ahead.

Detectors all pretty much suck in city environments as even the best detectors pick up a lot of false signals. the only time I find a detector worthwhile in the city is if it is a route you take all of the time and you learn all of the places for false signals. Personally I only use my detector on hour plus highway trips.

Depending where you live/park having a detector can be an invitation for someone to bash in one of your windows. Never leave your detector up, wipe off suction cup marks (thieves do look for the tell tale suction cup marks and can often tell what kind of detector you have just from the spacing and size of the marks), and even then a lot of thieves will follow people with detectors to where they live/park and bash the window looking for the detector even if you remove it from the car.

Another negative about a detector is if you are good at talking your way out of tickets once you have a detector sitting in your window you will not have much luck talking your way out of a ticket. Cops love to bust someone with a detector.

I have to agree that the absolute best detector is the Valentine 1. Radartest.com will tell you the 8500 is better (at least the last time I read the page), but the rumor is that they were paid off. When I bought my 8500 it has a radartest.com sticker on it as well as radartest.com pamphlet thing inside (nice publicity). I love my 8500 and it's faired very well against it's biggest rivals the Bel 980 and the Valentine 1. I do know people with both and have had the oportunity to ride on a road trips with them all and see first hand how well they react to the same situations. I love my 8500 and it's saved me more than once. However, I have been caught by instant-on which is 100% impossible to avoid with a detector. A good cop will only hit the cars he believes are speeding. Luckily many around here are lazy and either instant-on everyone that passes (providing plenty of stray signals to detect) or simply sit with it constantly on (again providing plenty of stray signal).

Like Chicago said though, laser is a joke. If it goes off, just start pulling over. Mine has gone off twice, both times I was doing at or barely above the limit and was left alone. A laser beam is much too focused and doesn't scatter like a radar signal does. The other thing to consider about the lazer jammer is that they are also illegal in most states by state law, not FCC like radar jammers. You'll find it under a heading like interfering with law enforcement speed regulation devices or something similar which also outlaws the passive radar jammers.

IMHO, if I had the money, I'd get a V1, otherwise it's a tossup between Bel and Passport. Save the money on the ZR3...

The BEST radar device in existence can transmit a return of
whatever speed you want the law to see! Radar returns are in the milliwatt level, so even a 1 watt gigahertz transmitter will overide your 120- oops, sorry, 108mph reflections. A military radar beacon transmitter tuned correctly will do the trick!
Experience speaks!!

It's hard to speed in rush hour traffic, from which I do about 90% of my driving in. :(

Although I do admit that in my 10 years of driving I have had 2 speeding tickets. One was for doing 40 in a 30. I was new to the area and didn't see the sign that said reduced speed and I went right through a speed trap. I was only written up for five over. The second one I was just being stupid and was doing like 87 in a 55. I got written up for doing 15 over. Believe it or not ever since that I've watched my speed. I don't see how a detector would have helped me in either of those instances. Oh well. That was years ago.

Isn't rush hour just a bitch here in the metro-detroit area Warlord?

I leave for work early and take 94 almost the whole way and I am lucky to hit 80 MPH in the left lane.

And for the trip home I am lucky to get above 70 MPH!

So in another word what warlord has said is so VERY true!

In my old intrepid 3.3l I used to go maybe 5 over but now that I got a 2nd Gen 3.5l ES that car just begs and pleads with me to put my foot down..... So now I spend a lot of time 10-20 MPH over. And the I haven't been caught you don't need a radar detector.... those things just make people paranoid! Just be smart look where they would hide. And for the love of god don't drive fast without a few wingmen..... The cops usually don't go after groups and if they do well they won't be getting all of you

You should just get to know the cops in your area and buy them drinks on the weekends with that radar detector money. It would work a lot better.

Rush hour...and pop-up construction zones!!!! I can deal with most construction zones as I can plan to go around them. But when I'm driving and come across a construction zone that wasn't there yesterday, it pisses me off because now it takes me 20 minutes to go a fucking mile!!!!

I know the feeling. :p We don't need construction zones to cause traffic...just a LOT of cars crammed on a little island. Traffic sucks.

Oh, I always go the speed limit myself so I've never had use for a radar/laser detector. I just set the cruise control so that I don't have to pay close attention to my speed.
